Whats everyone running for air intakes ? Any "homemade" ones?

Just wondering what everyones running for cold air intakes ? Anyone got any "homemade" ones ? Anyone running air filters with prefilters that go directly to the air box hole ? I hate the slp boot thing and having to take it on and off when taking off the hood, and its come undone before etc. Just looking to see what everyones running and if anyones running airfilters out of the hoods? I've seen it done lots on older kingcats and edge chassis but not on any of the newer sleds other then turbos. Ive been thinking of taking the stock air pendulim/tunnel off the underside of the hood and just opening up the airbox and putting mesh over it and venting out the nose/front of the hood right over the air box and also venting out the belly pan (somewhat along the lines of a bdx intake) also thought of running a airfilter to the air box. Just want thoughts pics and to see what everyones running. Thanks guys and happy riding !!! :thumb:
 
That is exactly what I am doing. Junked all the under hood intake crap (that my pipes were melting anyway) and put mesh over the airbox intake. Then started venting the front of the hood.
 
The stock intake will flow enough air up to a modded 1000cc engine. either stick with stock or go and get the bdx kit. The bdx kit is cheap for how well it works. I did many variations of a home made kit on my xf 800 big bore mod. I tried prefilters bullseyes all kinds of plates to separate the front of the hood from the back. I wish I had pix of all the things I tried. For a mostly trail sled you can just do what rixster is doing and vent and it will work ok. But for a powder sled it just doesn't work. Vents get clogged and the under hood air gets hot and you WILL LOSE HP! I say don't waste your time. It was my headache that I chased around for two seasons and finally ditched it and my sled ran perfect after I went to the bdx intake.
 
I just find the bdx really expensive and think you could do it alot cheaper. I could see your point on the front vents getting clogged up in powder which would be a problem for me. On the bold........... Its actually totally worth the money. Great kit. Great instructions. Very complete kit. However.... on a stock motor it gains ZERO HP. You do lose weight though. But maybe 8-10lbs max. But guys spend like 300 to lose the same weight with a can so its a cheap weight loss IMO.

I agree when you think of it that way just i dont want to spend that much really..... It seems like you could make a a better kit cheaper. How much room do you think is under the hood for piping ? do you think you could fit 1'' diameter piping up under the hood to the headlights ? I might have a idea like vent the front out and then run a fe flexible rubber "plumbing" style small diameter piping from the headlights under the hood and mesh the intake hole and then just run it there and vent out the air box more to and the front of the hood so even if your front vents get clogged you still have the pieces of piping bringing cold air down to the mesh over the airbox.

You won't build a better kit cheaper. The stock intake is equal to a 3" or larger diameter pipe. What good is a 1" pipe going to do? Here is the only way that you can do a home made intake that will work. Use the batwing vent idea then you need to build a vertical plate that will isolate the nose of the sled from the rear. this will serve two purposes. 1. it will keep the heat to the back of the engine compartment. 2. it will keep the cold air in the front of the hood.

then vent the nose like crazy and it may work. also you will need to vent up high in the hood like a gauge lifter so the heat has somewhere to go.

Ya i was thinking of making a heat shield and also i started venting the gauge area and venting that whole back side more, and the front. I was thinking about 4 1'' or smaller diamater rubber flexible tubbing run from one of the light holes that will be vented out down to over the mesh on the airbox so it will bring air from up there and poor it out over the meshed out airbox incase the front vents clog up with snow. It might be hard to understand, i think it would work though.

On my 09HCR I run a K&N filter with pre-filter on a stock airbox with a ZR 440 4 inch air horn. All the under hood stuff is gone so about 5 lbs of weight lose and $100.
 
I run prefilter over the stock intake horn on my 08 M8. Works good, cheap, and drops weight off the hood.

Got pics ? Also do you ever have the front end of the hood plug up with powder and then you bog or loose power ? Thats what im worried about thats why i want some air coming from up above or a airfilter and i dont want anything i have to disconnect when i take the hood off like my slp intake or the stock intake with the rubber boots.

To fix it, he did a little Home Depot experiment. He ran 2 sections of shop vac hose wrapped in heat tape up from the aftermarket airbox cover to the gauge pod area. It looks like a NASA project under his hood, but is really lightweight and seems to work really well.

I guess its kind of the same idea as the stock intake, but much less restrictive and doesn't take up much space. The engine is only ever running strictly off of those tubes when the nose is completely under, the rest of the time it can still pull from all of vents in the nose.

I'll try and get a couple pictures the next time I see it.

That kind of sounds like what i was thinking. Helps with my idea,pics would be great when you can get them. Im going to vent the front/nose of the hood vent the belly and then cut out more of the airbox kind of like the batwing style vents ill mesh everything out and then incase that gets covered with powder im going to run a airfilter up to one of the headlight holes and then run some kind of tubing to the airfilter and then im just going to run it down to the airbox and just put it down there to dump cold air out over the airbox incase the nose vents get plugged. Also im thinking im going to use clear silicone to hole them mesh on the backside of the hood. Can anyone think of a better way ?
