Whats a good sled for 13/14 yo?

Before I read the post, I was going to say get him a little Phazer or something from the mid 90's with about 400-500cc.

He is lucky. My first sled was a '77 Yamaha 340 and I thought that was fast. I was about 12 or 13 I think.

M6 153" would be awesome.

The cat has very controllable power and very easy to lay over. Also will hold resale value when he grows out of it. Would also be a good buddy sled if need be.

I'm sure you can find one for a good price.

I totally agree!! Our 13 year old rides a 2008 M6 153, it has been an awesome sled for him and can go where we all go in the mountains! He had an M5 before the M6 and that thing was a dog....the M6 has good power, easy to carve, boondock and trail ride. I would recommend the M6 for a good starter sled!!

I am 15 and started out on a 97 polaris indylite 340 when i was about 7 or 8 and then moved up to my dads 2000 RMK 600 when i was 11 or so and then i worked my a$$ off all summer so i could buy a 2002 RMK 700 which i just picked up yesterday.

I would reccomend a 99-01 GenII 600 or 700 or an 02-05 Edge 600 or 700. They are really easy sleds to learn on and are very reliable and you can pick one up for pretty cheap.
Just my .02 worth.

Put my 14 year old on an 03 156 900, wasn't the plan just got a screaming deal on it. He handled it fine and grew into it very fast. He started riding a 6.
Like suggested before an M6 or an M7 would be ideal. 153 or a 162. He will be able to ride it for years and they are very reliable sleds.

any pics of your new sled... there reliable sleds. how much did you pic it up for. i found some pretty cheap ones here in boise. well congrats on the new sled.

First of all I would like to take my hat off to you for taking the time for the youngster. It is a really great thing you are doing and he will remember what you are doing for him for the rest of his life.
As for the sled it really depends on his ability. My 14 year old rides my old 06 800 rev. It is alot of sled for him he only weighs 100 lbs. But he has been riding sleds and dirtbikes for 10 years now. I could have sold it and got a 600 for him but i really didn't see the point. The weight differnce isn't alot but the power isn't even comparable. He knows his boundaries on the throttle. Seat time is everything.
And once again hats off to you.

The last 3 years my son (now 12 years old) rode an 03 summit 550 fan with a 136" track with 1 1/2 lug. The sled was perfect as he was learning, but last year as he got more experienced/ comfortable on it it's underpowered. So I wanted to move him up to a USED 600 SDI but they cost nearly as much as an 800 so I am going to try him on my old 04 800 rev 151. The motor is the 500SS is the same as the 1999 Summit 600 that I rode back in the day and the REV chassis is better and lighter. I think the power should be fine, if you can get him some track to run in the fluff.

Sounds like you have the right sled with a couple of mods. I picked up a Mtn Lite 500 144 x 2" for 1550 with 762 miles on it. For my 10 year old. Seems like 400-600's are good starter's for the pre teen years.

I would think the Rev 500ss would be fine with a 144x2 track, maybe 16 wide with the center lugs cut down to 1.75" like they did back in 99-00. Maybe some 6.9 Pilot takeoff skis, and a dynoport pipe and can. Put them on a 99 MXZ 600, helped the motor out.
My boy started out on a 95 Summit 583, which got converted to an S-chassis, then he moved up to a Racer-X with a 700 last year, that 700 with an RKT head and HPS can in that lightweight chassis runs very well.

I picked mine up for 2400. The Chassis is in VERY good condition and it runs great. Here are some pics of it.

love those kids

My son is only 8 and he will be on an 06 m5 141 with a 2" track this year.Last year he was on a z 370 and handled that like a champ, actually rode my xpx in the open areas and did real good.He was on a mini-z since he was 4 yrs old,so he has had some practice.Should be interesting, kept the z370 just in case it is to much for him,but i doubt it.

Spoiled Kids / Adults

Wow- I am way way way older than 13, and feel pretty lucky to have just bought a two year old sled. How many posts are here from parents whose 8, 10, 13 year old has a two or three year old or newer sled? My 13 year old daughter and my 17 year old son got to "share" the 10 year old RMK. When I got my "new" 2 y.o. M8, the 17 y.o. had the option to buy my old Summit 800from me (at pretty good discount) if he wanted to.
And its not like we don't ride much. When he was in 5th grade we had a 340 Cat- 136' baloney skin track with TCD studs- that he rode to the top of Wortman's Glacier (just outside Valdez, Alaska). Yeah it got stuck a lot, but it was fun. This past winter, we were at Chitina for a 4 day ride. We folded folded a trailing arm up on the 500, and crunched a buddy's Dragon on the first and second day. As a result he ended up on a wornout '91 Polaris Sport GT- 440 fan w/ a 141" baloney skin. He thought it was the funnest sled out there- light and he had to be smart to keep up. We climbed from sea level to about 8,000 feet. Its not the sled...its the doing it.

Any liquid cooled 600cc sled would be fine as long as it isn't a trail sled. Stay away from the fan cooled sleds. Won't take him but 5 minutes to outgrow the powerband and he be hatin it. A good 600 will take him a long ways until he devops the skills and respect to graduate to a more powerful and expensive sled. My 2 cents.

i would also like to give you a big thumbs up for being there for this kid while his dad left him. I would say go with an 05 or 06 m7 should work great for him.

no kiddin, im lucky to find blown up old crap that i can fix and ride. my newest sled is 01

It sounds like you are on the right track with this youngster and I admire you for that. Now I'll share my experience. When it came time for our boy to go to the mountains for the first time I bought a used sled for him to ride. Now when it came time to strip the sled and check and service all the bearings, fuel lines, etc and get the sled ready for a mountain ride I had the boy help me do the work. The time in the shop was good for both of us and when he made his first ever trip to Grand Lake with me he was proud of his sled and took good care of it. He still couldn't believe I waxed my sleds !!! >>>>.
