A baby born in British Columbia, Canada is thought to be one of the first in the world not to be recognized as either a boy or a girl on their national health card.

Searyl Atli’s parent Kori Doty, who is transgender and nonbinary, is now fighting for British Columbia to issue a birth certificate without any specific gender, according to CBC. Doty, who uses the pronoun their, said they don’t want to assign the baby a gender until the child can decide for themselves who they are.

"I'm raising Searyl in such a way that until they have the sense of self and command of vocabulary to tell me who they are, I'm recognizing them as a baby and trying to give them all the love and support to be the most whole person that they can be outside of the restrictions that come with the boy box and the girl box," Doty told CBC.

Poor kid doesn't stand a chance.
Too bad that garbage can be parents.
That's what is so sad about it. We as parents have learned through life experiences of raising kids that it's not always easy for us or our kids. Now throw that into the kids life! And the parents are to blame for it.

Like Marty said.

Pro Tip:

If the baby has a unit, it's a boy. If it doesn't, it's a girl.

See how much trouble I just saved them?

Oh, and I refuse to use the pronoun 'their' on personal principles. I don't care what 'they' like to call themselves.

I'm going to regret this.

Devils advocate, what exact negative effects are going to come from this? The kid is going to get exposed to gender through other people/tv/etc. When they are about 2-3, if they're anything like my kids. they'll start to point out "Hey, I'm a (X or Y)" and be done with it.

You're awfully invested in someone else's parenting decisions for someone who claims to be libertarian.

I don't think you need to regret being a devil's advocate. But I can say there will be negative effects. Can you imagine the teasing he/she will get growing up???
I can just hear the comments from his peers. Ha Ha his parents are so dumb they couldn't tell if he was a boy or girl when he was born. Or, maybe, what are you wearing today? A jock strap or a bra. I grew up in a ruthless time and neighborhood so I know first hand what it like to be bullied and have the s**** kicked out of you just for being average. :clock:

But I will regret it, simply because of the comments that have already come mocking a trans person as being garbage and that they shouldn't be allowed to have children.

Think about what you're (not you specifically) saying when you say someone shouldn't be allowed to have kids. Think about who you sound like, and how short the walk is to someone saying YOU shouldn't be allowed to breed.

Sure, this kid will get teased. Because of parents like those in this thread that teach their kids that this is something to mock or be ashamed of. Teach your kids to respect other kids.

Dammit, I don't have enough restraint to refrain from replying. :face-icon-small-fro

We don't simply leave our children to learn right from wrong on their own, we do our best to teach them that.
There are other issues where you raise a good point and we have a very good back and forth going. But this is so black and white that it is not worthy of debate.
And I stand by my remark that these parents are garbage, because they are needlessly making this child's future extremely difficult.

In a perfect world there would not be a problem. The parents would in fact let the kid decide and figure it out. In reality the parents will not let the child choose until they are older and they will most likely confuse the crap out of him/her (didn't read the article so no idea which chromosome). Kids are good at grouping things and I bet if it is a boy he will identify himself as a boy and play with other boys.

But I'm sure the parents will be sure to let every single person within 10 feet of the child know that the kid doesn't have a gender. Kinda like a vegan crossfitter :juggle:

I suppose next there will be some parent(s) who decide not to state whether their baby is human or not. I guess anything is possible.

So how old do you folks think the child will be before it decides what it is?

By the time it's peers ask it, it will be able to answer.

Most kids won't find it odd up through preschool age.

I mean it would just be so confusing to have boy/girl parts and yet be told you can be either one. How does a child comprehend something like that? I'm not saying they can't, but it will be interesting to see how it turns out I guess. It is like telling a kid the square isn't a square because it will fit in the circular hole in one of those kid games.

If you read the article, none of that is suggested. All it says is that the parent doesn't want to declare sex on the birth certificate, or force the kid into stereotypical gender roles, until the kid is old enough to tell the parent what they want.

Like I said above, if anything like my kids, they'll be like 2.5 when they start that process. Many kids that come out later in life claim to have known since they were very small, as long as they can remember.

I just don't really see how this is an issue except for people who want to see all "other" people as "garbage".

Lighten up Clarence, not everyone is garbage. Just libbies that encourage their children to behave in a manor that would ensure that they would be bullied.

Poor kids wouldn't stand a chance. Probably grow up to be forum moderators.

Anyone catch the show about transgenders, hosted by Katie Coruic.
Made up my mind I was going to be open minded about it.
It didn't have all the answers, but it sure did help with some misconceptions.

Watch it.
I dare all of you.
