What oil?

What oil do you use in your 900? We have been running Polaris gold full synthetic for the last couple years but its real spendy. Also whats the difference between the Polaris gold and the Polaris blue? Thanks for your input.

ive only used polaris ves gold, yes its expensive but probably worth it. im not sure what other oils you can run in it, but thats what i use. also love the smell.

Been running Polaris VES gold and you can still see the factory hone marks in the cylinders on my 05.

Most of the guys I ride with run Amsoil Interceptor, It works good with the Exhaust valves. As soon as I use up the 2 gallons of VES Gold I am switching to it.

JUNK!

do a search for the thread "crankin' on my 900" you will be busy for at least an hour reading it...

TONZ of talk about what oil, and indydan stated in there what he will only use..since then i have ONLY used these oils and been GREAT, and much cheaper then AMSOIL, VES, ect..

Citgo Sea & Snow=GREAT
Castrol 2T=GREAT
Phillips Injex=GREAT

this is all i use for what its worth.

Just looked and VES is selling for around 28 online for a gallon. Amsoil runs around 28 if you have a friend who is a dealer or you are a prefered customer. what do the oils you listed run?

I just payed $18ca / 4l jug for Castrol 2T last week, at Wallmart

Citco, i can get by the quart for $4 or so, of by the Gallon for $18 (you can get it as gas stations usually. Even O'Reillys had it

Castrol 2T, you can get at lots of gas stations, usually $5/quart. never seen by the gallon, but seen it in cases...

you will just have to check around...

per indydan, you want to use the Mineral Oil, or Petroleum oil...not synthetic

That is a pretty interesting read. Coming from Dan who I believe is the only guy who has the 900 cranks figured out and since I plan on having him build a crank for me over the summer and he says VES voids his guarantee I guess I will be switching to Castrol.

I have to drain the tank when I pull the engine to install the new motor mounts so now is a good time to switch.

I ran castrol in my dirtbikes and they always seem to run better. One thing he said I found interesting and am going to start doing it ad a pint of oil for every tank full of gas.

Anyone want to buy a couple gallons of VES for cheep...lol

Castrol Super Snowmobile Oil (Canadian version of the Castrol 2T)
As recommended by mr Indy Dan.
Read the thread Guidoexpress suggested!!!
Here you go, READ IT! especially those of you still running VES Gold with the illusion it's good for your engine.:face-icon-small-con

On the bold. Me, my father and couple others switched to that a couple winters ago. Then they went through a couple pistons each breaking at the skirts. Didn't have any problems with mine (although I only tried it for about 3 months) but they switched back to Polaris blue early last winter and they haven't had a problem since. Was probably due to the cold/dry temps we have up north here has something to do with it. Sure made the 900 a lot easier to pull on when -30c and colder but didn't want to take a chance of pistons breaking and waiting on snail mail for parts. Don't get me wrong, it is a great oil in early fall and spring just didn't like the extreme cold. It was a good price and might use it once temps warm up. Plus when spring comes around and they have a lot of it in stock they will lower the price to make room for next barge shipment. Pay about 50 for a gallon of VES gold and 43 for Polaris blue. The Castrol was a good deal for 38 I think it was for a gallon. (Up in northern Canada about everything here is flown in and barge only once a year summer)I use the Polaris blue for price reasons and clean the valves every 500 miles and not much to clean so I am happy with it. Just a pain in when about cold to turn the engine over.

The broken skirts were on Polaris 550 engines and 500/600 xc's. All were properly jetted and set up alright. Must be just too thin for the cold. Think 3 pistons were from 550's and one each from 500 and 600. But the cats 570 buddy has runs it and no problem. But he doesn't put high mileage on or rides aggressive rider. Also here they are the ones always have a good stock on the shelves.

Another thing is no one has heated garages here so maybe with that oil when the engine goes from cold all night to riding temps (with a good normal warm up of course) the heat/cold difference affects it. Not sure. Just wondering what else it would be from only with that oil. Any ideas anyone?

I still am happy running the VES gold. Power valves were nice and clean after 1100 miles, compression was perfectly even on both sides, and motor runs good... no plans to change it in the future.

Ves, Walmart, Orielly oil

Ford, Chevy, Dodge trucks

Take your pick, lol.

IMO

This is one of those topics that nobody will ever agree on, I think there's a thread in General snowmobiling with 2 or 3 hundred posts in it about oil.

Mine looks new inside with VES too. I think Starting your sled once a month and letting it run up to operating temp over the summer and storing it inside helps too.

I feel I need to clarify... I was not speaking from years of long term testing or observations, I was simply relaying Indydan's advice. I mean... if he doesn't know whats works properly.... who does?
I do however have an opinion against full synthetic 2cycle oils.

Dan posted this after the other post about oils.

http://www.snowest.com/forum/showthread.php?t=92802

Pretty much says there is a time and a place when synthetics are superior, specifically when it is extremely cold. Dan also said he runs he fuel premixed at 100:1 (1 pint of oil in every tank) even with injection. I wonder if running the castrol 100:1 in the gas and the synthetic in the injection would cause any problems.

1st bold-Seeing that post I wonder if I should go back to VES. I must have missed it when I first read that thread. But haven't had any problems with the Polaris blue oil.

2nd bold- I was just talking about oils with a buddy last night and he said he has taken his injection off beginning of last years season and haven't had a problem using the Castrol as mix 20:1. So shouldn't be a problem using it 100:1 to go along with the injection.

If it is working for you, I wouldn't switch back. Once your sled is warmed up the oil bottle is sitting next to the motor so it gets warmed up too. If you are riding in sub zero weather all the time you may want to test the flow of your oil like Dan suggests.

Thanks will do that.

Forgot to mention this but it probably belongs here. I ran Polaris blue in my Indy 650 and the crank bearings rusted over the summer and killed the engine 12 miles into the first ride of the year. I had to hitch a ride off the mountain and come back and get it with a trailer.

I have had at lest 5 Polaris sleds come though my shop in the past 2 years burned down from your good old {Polaris Gold } purer Junk NEVER NEVER RUN THAT CHIT:crazy::argue:

Yup, that is what Dan said too. What oil do you prefer? I had already planned on switching from the gold as soon as a ran out of what I have, but probably going to drain it all before the first ride since I am pulling the engine anyway.

Just out of curiosity were these stock sleds or modified sleds?
