What makes the 05 & 06 900 RMK So Heavy?

So why is the 05/06 900 RMK so Heavy? Is it the motor? I have Powder Pro Skis/Boss Seat/SLP Pipe and Can/Ported Track/Radiator Delete w/ TCP intake/Holtz Spindles.......etc but it is still a Heavy Beast.

Polaris hired former Battleship engineers to design it.:face-icon-small-hap

I had a 05 900 that was moded out and now have a 07 M1000 and would say they are comparable in weight.

Having torq means a bigger motor.:face-icon-small-win

That picture looks "like the story of my rides" since I upgraded?? from my Vertical Escape to an 05 900 159". I hope I learn to ride it and enjoy riding it as much as others on this Forum do.

There a great sled, I put 4500 miles on mine.
You just need to get it set-up for you.

The motor alone weighs roughly 20 lbs more than the newer 800s, and the chassis itself is a beast too... Keep in mind you can drop 40 lbs off these things REAL easy as it looks like you have done. When setup to your style they are a lot more forgiving.

Among other things, I pulled the sway bar, increased the preload on the front springs, and have the limiters all the way out. This translates into a very 'tippy' machine that is easy to pull over when you want to carve things up:face-icon-small-hap

If you're not happy with the handling, start playing around with ski width, preload, limiters, steering post position (rider select or delete both offer adjustment), etc. The Powder Pro's offer a very aggressive design to them and if you want your skis to slide around just a little bit, they might not work well for you, lots of guys run the grippers as they offer great flotation, and confident handling without the jerking you around.

Forgot to mention that the stock spindles are junk.... go with some '08-10 Polaris spindles for lighter weight and better geometry. Some go with the Holtz, but they are typically more money and there's nothing wrong with newer OEM :beer;

Throttle is your friend, pin it and go. The engine is quite a bit heavier and had a larger rotating mass. Powder Pro skis will make your steering substantially heavier if you are not on the throttle in powder.

Changing to a timbersled skid drops 16 to 20 lbs on an 05/06. timbersled front end drops 8 lbs. Fox floats another 6 lbs.

The IQ chassis also does not handle like the older chassis. You have to relearn how to ride it and let it do the work. If you try to ride it like the older sled it will work you.

Thanks. I've got the Holtz and Powder Pros. I'm going with the Simmons Gen 3 as soon as available. I'm going to adjust the strap from the middle to the bottom when I put on the Simmons. I moved the rider select from 7 to 5 based on recomendation but I have not ridden it since. I put a Boss seat on my wifes 2000 700 Gen 2 with a 144" track and rode that yesterday to make sure everything was working. Yes there is a big difference in how you need to ride the new compare to the old sleds. With that 900 "Stuck Truly Does Suck"!

take a 900rmk motor and put it on a bench next to a 800 doo motor... the 900 looks like it means business.

its a domino effect. more power heavy engine, heavy engine and more power beefier frame and supports.

i had the powder pros on my 9 for 2 seasons and hated them way too agressive and heavy turning. i switched to the gen 1 simmons and love them you just can't beat simmons skis, my brother has the gen 2 simmons and they are great for powder riding and trail but he has a hard time sidehilling with them. you will think you have a diff. sled when you put the simmons on.

i can also vouch for the timbersled rear skid. mine was 15lbs lighter than stock and the ride is so much better than stock i can run rough trails a lot faster than the other two 900's in my group and it climbs well and keeps the skis down. i just love it.

Ah yes the timbersled skid truly shines when you hit a section of wash-boarded out trail. While everyone else is getting their kidneys pounded out the Timbersled mountain tamer just floats over it and you don't feel a thing.:couch2:

yes it seams the harder you push it the better it does :face-icon-small-ton

Wow, different opinions I had had 5 sets of simmons before my 900. I decided to go with them for my 9 because they worked so good on my other sleds prior to the iq. They totally sucked! heavy, heavy steering and knifed in terribly. Tryed powder pros and loved them. The powder pros are a real aggressive ski that are one of the best for boondocking. If you do alot of trail riding and less boondocking use the simmons. If you want the best overal ski very predicable Polaris grippers are great.

I have the Powder Pros but I'm going to try the Simmons Gen 3. They are 8" wide compare to the Gen 1 which is 6" wide. I am hoping the Simmons will run more like a tunnel boat as opposed to the Pros which track like a Deep V Boat. The Pros turn once you get the handle bar turned. I am hoping that since the saddles mounts are on top of the Simmons opposed to the bottom of the Pros that I will get better front end floatation. Then I will put the limiter strap in the in the bottom and the front track shock in the upper hole. Hopefully then I can learn to ride the Beast or at least keep it upright??
