What kind of fuel mileage are you getting with the hemi?

What are you pulling? How fast? And what kind of fuel mileage are you looking at? What kind of mileage empty?

Looking at getting rid of my diesel, which is paid for, for a gasser. Just wondering if it is worth it.

Looking for a 09 up, and I will be pulling a 4 place enclosed that weighs in at about 7000# loaded.

thanks

I just did my first trip to Skyland with my '08 1/2 ton on saturday. On the whole tank, half of which was used during the haul up there and back with my 2 place with 2 sleds driving 75 all the way up, and 80 all the way back. I made 11.2 MPG. I would guess with the trailer I was probably getting 9-10 MPG. Unloaded running up and down the highway I get between 13-15 MPG. My dad and brother in law have a '10 and '12 both being 1/2 tons they don't do much better than me.

I have a 10' Crew Cab with the Hemi. It has the 3.92 LSD rear end. I have a 3 place inline aluminum trailer. I get a little over 10 with 3 4wheelers in it back & forth to the cabin about 73 MPH. I get around 15 daily driving. Have seen as good as 19 MPG empty on the interstate. I ran out to the snowies this summer. 1 wheeler in the box and 1 on a single place trailer. I got an average of 14 MPG. I am headed to the Snowies tomorrow AM. I will know more about what kind of mileage pulling the 3 place.

We take an 11 mega cab 3/4 ton with the hemi and 24ft aluminum inline out west and it gets about 9 at the worst and 12 at best. Average on the truck reads around 10. The rpm's are up there since it's a gas so we usually tow around 70-75mph. I believe the trailer is only 4500-5000 lbs loaded.

My 04 quad got about 9 pulling an all alum 4 place enclosed 75, rarely ever drove it w/o a trailer behind it. Just got an '11 mega w/ a cummins and gets 11 and pulls it effortlessly. No regrets at all about getting the diesel, well, except the fact that it was $30k more than my 04 was.

I have a 2010 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi and I get about 17.5 for every day driving back and forth to work mostly freeway if you want to call rush hour on I-5 in Seattle freeway driving. And when I tow my 3 place aluminum enclosed with 2sleds in it about 3500 lb's I probably get about 9ish depending head winds but when I tow my 22' boat that weights closer to 5k lb's I actually get around 12 mpg I think because it has less wind drag.

I did have a 2005 F-250 diesel and daily driving I got about 15 mpg and towing was 10 to 11 but the price difference for the diesel and 4 gal. oil changes didn't add up to keep it, and I drive between 25 to 30k a year even though it towed effortlessly. The Dodge tow's good also but it just makes me cringe when I hit a big hill and the RPM's jump up to 4500

The Dodge is hands down a better riding truck and way more comfortable seats than the Ford but I will probably will go back to a diesel down the road when I don't have to drive quite so much plus I want to go to a larger boat down the road to.

Keep the diesel. Towing with a gas anything sucks. I used to have a 08 6.0 chevy thing sounded like it was gonna explode trying to go up hills or buck a wind. I'll go broke before I go back to gas!

Second keeping diesel. I think it will pull the trailer but you won't be impressed. I traded the Duramax in on a cummins and also bought a 2011 f150. F150 empty is 20mpg easy but lugs pulling anything that heavy

Yeah keep the diesel. Dont get me wrong a gas will do it but hey, you got the diesel and say you get a pretty good wind, peace of mind is way better with the diesel.

A couple of friends of mine bought 11 1/2 ton hemi's, both extra cab 4x4's i drove one on a little trip and if you keep it under 70, and/or get the four cylinders to shut down you can get 20+ mpg, if the all the cylinders are workin its 14-15. I don't think any of the 2500 hemi's have the mds or whatever they call the system that shuts the cyls down.

Have a 2011 Crew Cab Sport Hemi. SUCKS gas for sure. Not impressed! Gets 13 mpg all around driving. Can get as high as 18 mpg in MN for its 55 speed limit and about 16 on the interstate. Pulling doesnt do bad when towing my car trailer with Prowler UTV on it but it will suck gas faster still vs empty. I have a Duramax and it does way better empty. My wife still loves driving the Hemi. Thats why its still in the stable. So for you guys that will use the truck for everything, get a DIESEL. I don't care if the hemi is cheaper upfront or any other big blocks for that matter. Try it and you'll be happy

What do you have for a diesel? I have a 2011 Ram 1500 with a Hemi. Might be willing to work out a trade with ya.

Coming from a diesel guy ... the hemi will do it but be understanding that they ake their horsepower at much higher rpms than say my 06 cummins. So when you hit a hill or head wind its going to shift down. But thats where these engines like to run for peak power. My family has had a number of hemi's and cummin's. If you are looking at investment cost with the addition of operating costs the hemi is cheaper. I will say though you will never have the easy feeling of the diesel pulling anything. I think if you are towing 5,000 lb. or more for long distances go with the diesel. my .02

2012 2500 w/3.73 gearing

Two trips to Cooke City from MN. 2 place w/ugly homemade salt shield and one in back of the truck. West across NoDAk always sucks 7.5-9 mpg The rest of trip there and back a'int bad. 9-11.5. mpg. Same trailer with my '03 7.3l F-350 got 9.9 all day. Running 70-75 with both trucks. I'm a big 5.7 hemi fan. Two previous hem's in work trucks 04 and 09. 127,000 on 04 with no problems. 09 has 77000 on it w/no problems. THERE IS NO REDLINE ON THE TACH.

had 04' hemi 2500. 285 tires and pullin 24' enclosed interstate with three sled i saw 5.4 mpg one trip!!! I pull trailer on avg about 70-75 mph. avg was about 13 empty and 6-8 pulling. got gmc duramax and with same size tires and pulling same trailer to same location i see avg of 10-14 mpg pulling and 17-19 empty. will NEVER go back to a gasser!!!

I'd say with a trailer that big, stay with the diesel. I just sold my diesel and bought a new '11 Dodge 1500 Hemi. Absolutely love the truck, lots of power and rides like a caddy, BUT mileage sucks, I don't get anywhere near 20 empty but I put on big tires before I even drove it and I've heard that affects it some and I've only got 2000 miles on it so maybe it will improve a little. Towing is different, I have nothing more than a small 2 place clamshell trailer now and it pulls it fine but anything bigger and the diesel shines. The Hemi's power is at a much higher rpm, I'm not used to hearing revs like that.

I just purchased a 2012 Ram 2500 Crew Cab with a Hemi at Christmas time. I pull a Triton TC118 2 place trailer and with the Hemi I am only getting about 9 MPG with the trailer behind. I also have a 1998 Dodge with a Cummins and I get about 14.5 MPG with that when I am pulling the sleds. I think the wind resistance with that trailer is really bad because I get about 16 MPG pulling my 20' boat. Maybe mileage on the Hemi will get better, but until it does I will pull the sleds with the old diesel. By the way, I get about 13.5 MPG with the Hemi empty.

Well I got back and added up all the gallons and divided by the miles and it came out to 9 MPG. There was 10 or 15 minutes of idleing at Green Rock every day while loading and such before heading back down the hill. We did get one tank of fuel in SD that was crap! We barely got over 200 miles out of that tank. So not too sure if that affected the over all. The computer was hovering around 10 MPG until that tank. There was alot of wind out & back. Overall I like the truck and motor. If I was going to be making that trip more than a couple of times a year I might consider a diesel but the other 360 days the gas sure is nice.
