What is this noise?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJsNpXVxpi8

This is a short video of my 03 Mountain Cat 900 running. When it is coming back down to an idle from being revved up, it has this popping noise coming from the engine compartment. I can't pinpoint where it is coming from, whether it is from the clutch or the engine itself. Has anyone heard this before? I can't hear it when the throttle is applied, only when it is revving back down to an idle. It is very audible in the video. Thanks for any insights.

I agree, it sounds like the starter pawl is not retracting all the way and is ticking on the starter cup. Better take the starter off and check. The nut that holds all the guts together on the starter is probably coming loose. You don't want to ignore it, if it comes apart you can get pieces behind the flywheel and ruin it and the stator. Don't ask how I know, LOL.

On your recoil there are two or three pawls that throw out when you pull the rope. They engage a hub on the crank. When rope goes back in the pawls should pull back in. Takes about 10 min to pull off and check. When you have it apart check and make sure the nut in the center in tight.

I would definitely have checked that out, except I don't have electric start.:face-icon-small-con

I wasn't talking about electric start but the recoil like one of the other replies said. There is only one pawl in that recoil also.

Could it be a motor mount? Looks like the engine moves around quite a bit. Use a piece of rubber hose like a stethoscope and place it at different spots on the engine.

I was going to say that also. That motor is moving ALOT ! I ber you have a broken or loose motor mount. Those motors vibrate alot while idleing but not when reved. Them smooth right out above idle rpm.
