What is the tachometer/RPM gauge source?

Hi,

As title above says, where does the display/ecu get the info on what RPM the engine has?

I think it's the voltage coming from the stator at different RPM's that goes through the voltage regulator, and from there sends a signal the ECU which sends a signal to the display showing us the correct RPM. The more voltage from stator coming through, the more RPM the engine must have.

Or does the info come from the CPS, and does the CPS signal go through the VR before being processed in the ECU?

But can anyone confirm this or correct me? My tachometer went out before the sled died on me, and I'm wondering if this could be a good sign of a bad voltage regulator.

Thanks!
