What is needed to reflash an ECU

Did some searching and couldn't find an answer. Can the dealer reflash just the ECU or do you need to bring them the entire sled so they can hook up to it?

The 2 dealers I dealt with said they could only flash an ecu installed in the sled. Their interface with the laptop will only plug in to the sleds wiring harness, not directly into the ecu.

I also contacted SLP trying to mail my ecu to them to get the flash for their pipe on my 900.... no go. They told me although they can directly connect to my ecu, this would violate their agreement with polaris which apparently states that a polaris dealer must do the flashing. Maybe someone with better connections could get slp or carls or someone to do it.... dunno.

The laptops at the dealers I tried would not recognize that they were connected to my sled, as if it didn't exist. They all scratched their heads and squinted at me in vain with no solution lol. Glad those days are over!

would it be possible to just use an old wiring harness for them to connect to it?. I would be a whole lot easier than dragging the entire sled to the dealer just to get the ECU flashed to the 900 settings.

I'm just guessing at this point, but I think the system would need to be grounded somehow, and possibly all of your sensors plugged in? worth a shot I suppose if it's really that difficult to haul the sled in.

Yes, new ECU's are blank...flashed @ dealership after install on sled, existing ECU's are reflashed installed on existing sled @ dealership. I agree with this "protocol" for reasons I'm not going into here, but...for purposes in engine rebuilding, you can use any (known to work) 700,900, 2inj, 4inj, 2005, 2006, Polaris, SLP flashed ECU...to test run engine, now, we're talking just long enough to establish there is fire spittin out those jugs! That being said, sometimes Digital Wrench won't recognize VIN#/ECU and someone from Roseau factory will need to authorize flash to continue. If this person is out to lunch, on vacation, dog ate his car keys..etc., there will be a delay! Long story short, don't let ECU flash slow down the build.

Alright, thanks for your help guys. The reason I was wondering is that the local Polaris dealer doesn't deal with sleds much anymore, they will work on them some but not sell them. And the other dealers are a couple of hours away. I'll just get it all back together and get it flashed then.

I'm in the same boat as new fusion with my 06... do they need access to the ECU itself ? Can I take the sled to the dealer 100% assembled? I don't want to pay the dealer to remove my tank and console etc etc.

Where's the plug that they use to flash a new ECU?
My dealer wasn't much help with this line of questioning!

Yeah Danduvall, that would be a bit dis-concerting..hearing that from your dealer! Rest assured there is a digital wrench & ecu power-up port on the wiring harness. You'll need to find a different dealer if they're, well, not up to speed. Also, download the shop manual..it helps out a bit, lacking in some areas but overall pretty good rag.

Has anyone ever successfully had a 700 ECU programmed to a 900 ECU? Just got off the phone with someone at the Polaris sled dealer and he said he doesn't even know if it is possible.

Never had it done, but sure i read it somewhere it can be done without issues. If the dealer doesnt know though ,i think id move on to the next!
