What insulation to use for enclosed trailer?

I think your problem is...the trailer won't hold any heat when the roof is up?
Hah, hah, hah

:D

Thats a cool trailer Supplicate. Did you build that? Looks aerodynamic!
Yep, my dad dreamed this design up ~ 11 or 12 years ago. Was built 10 years ago IIRC.

holy crap! that is a cool trailer. I've never seen anything like that. Probably pulls great...
You wouldn't believe how good it bucks the Wyoming wind until you pull it. Interested in buying one? A few friends and I are talking about building the next generation of this trailer and marketing it.

It is a foot taller than normal and has 30 amp electric, sky lights, 2 roof vents wired for ac, 22' roll out awning, RV door on curb side, cataletic heater... we use it for camping / motox in the summer and sledding in the winter.
yeah, my dad bought one similar to that and b!tches about it non-stop. He misses this trailer, but we can't fit 4 modern mountain sleds in it. In that last pic there are 2 Edge 144 sleds, one 136 Wedge and one 136 Gen II trail sled. As it sits now it has an IQ 155 and an Apex in it, we are at a loss as to how we are going to get the Edge 156 in it.

Is it possible for the line to freeze and stop the flow?
We've had water in the lines at work before that stopped the flow, also if the tank gets cold enough it won't have as much vapor pressure and could cause issues.

sledhauler, I believe the catlytic heater runs on vapor so maybe your tank was full and kicked some fluid into the line while driving? Mine does the same thing.

Have you thought about trying the professional blowin insulation that expands once it is sprayed on? They can spraying on at different thicknesses. Its something similar to the foam in a can but MUCH better quality. Just a thought.

Can you suggest a brand to look into? I found the Icynene site and it looks interesting, just don't know if it will work in a trailer situation though.

That part I can't help you out on. Sorry. I do know that does work very well. A neighbor had sprayed in pole barn before he put up the scratchy kind insulation. I believe he sprayed it so that once it expanded it was 3 inches. Gave him a R-10 rating. Hope that helps.

Any local construction company should either offer that type of insulation or should be able to point you in the right direction. I watched a video of how it's blown in and then the excess is shaved off. Pretty cool and no gaps in the coverage.

Cool trailer BTW. I have pulled a shorty like that and it pulled great, but it didn't have the expando roof like yours. Great idea.

I use an Olympic Wave 8 catalytic heater in mine. Its only 8000 BTU max. uses about 1/3 pound per hour. It will heat a 24' up to 75 plus degrees on the thermometer when it is 35 degrees outside but it takes 5 or 6 hours! Found this out when I left it running while riding the other day! Oops...felt good getting undressed though. I might do that again.

i use that same heater. i can't believe that it works as well as it does

Cool Trailer

I've never seen anything like it. One thing to remember with the Mr. Heater is that it isn't forced air so the air cools and settles rather quickly. Are you looking to heat when it is at home? How about an elec forced air?

If you do decide to insulate, it looks like your trailer is a good candidate for rigid sheets. Lots of choices out there.

Thanks guys :beer;

After looking at the weights of different insulation types (expanding foam is a bit too much per sq.ft. for my tastes) I'm thinking of going with the blue board foam insulation that Home depot caries.

Also going to try and figure out some way to mount a forced air heating system.

Any of the rigid work real well. If you go with a fiber type insulation make sure it is not moisture sensative. I would also suggest covering it with an F.R.P. product. Fill the gaps with expanding foam, cover it with FRP and Bob's you uncle. A nice warm trailer.

i did this same thing and did the frp on the ceiling and 1/8 aluminum on all my walls.once the walls heated up i was good to go. also used catalytic 8 heater and am able to sleep in it. i like it because i'm cheap and it is cheap like my future ex. wife. also mental,,, note keep the top down and it will heat up better. cool trailer though

I would go with extruded polystrene (blue, pink, etc) not foil backed, spray in, blow in or batt because they will absorb moisture extruded will never absorb moisture therefore maintain its R value.
