I've always liked to make a sled video at the end of the year and usually do... This year however i've met a professonal photographer (happens to be my room mate). I took him up last weekend to film me sledding and this is what he came up with. Please remember this is a work in progress and from only one day, if it runs choppy click the HD button on the side of the screen it should fix the problem.

We were up at Whistler riding Brandywine.

Is there any focus issues with the 5Dii? I was thinking about getting one for the HD video but didn't think the focus would be able to keep up to the action.

No man don't know any Lindberg boys, do they ride whilster a lot?

Canucklehead, i really don't know anything about the camera, it is really clear though, the 2 min video that i have on my computer at home is 655mbs. plus i got some stills from the video that are super clear, i will post them later when i get them loaded up.

hahaha fist day on the new motor too, gotta break'er in right ;)

Depends what you mean by issues? If you plan on pointing it and expecting it to auto focus like a camcorder then you will probably be disappointed. While it does auto focus it is limited. Manual focus is the way to go on this camera in video mode but does take some getting used to. Now having said that if you want total creative expression with great use of DOF captured in all its beauty at 30fps on a full frame 35mm sensor then by all means pick one up.

Here is what is on canon`s site about focusing in video mode on the 5d mark II.

I love the camera :)

Focusing in Movie Mode
Focusing is a powerful creative tool in both still and moving images: Along with composition, movement, and lighting, focus helps to manipulate your viewers' eyes to the most important element of the frame.
It is possible to focus a Canon EF lens manually or automatically while capturing a movie with the EOS 5D Mark II camera. For example, when the 5D Mark II is set for Live Mode AF or Face Detection Live Mode AF in Live View, it is possible to autofocus the lens before or during a movie clip by pressing the camera’s AF ON button. However, we recommend focusing before the movie begins for the following reasons:

* The speed of AF in these modes may seem slow to the average viewer if it is performed while recording a movie.
* Live Mode AF with or without Face Detection is a locking type of autofocus; it cannot track a subject moving towards or away from the camera.
* Depending on the lighting conditions, there may be a change in exposure level while AF is being performed.
* If you are using the camera’s internal microphone, it will pick up the sound of the lens’s focusing motor while AF is being performed, resulting in unwanted audible clicking noise.

Therefore, from an aesthetic perspective, you may find it more practical to autofocus the lens before recording begins. Of course, remember that it’s also possible to focus manually at any time. This can come in handy when you want total control of the lens' speed and timing -- for example, to transition from a sharply focused image to a blurred one (or vice versa); to follow a moving subject; or to rack focus between different planes in your shot (i.e. foreground to background).
The EOS 5D Mark II’s 3-inch, 920,000 dot Clear View LCD screen makes it easy to focus and compose images with its brilliant, sharp display. Additionally, it’s possible to superimpose fine or coarse grids as a compositional aid, and it’s also possible to superimpose a semitransparent border for 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios.

Thanks hardkore. I have read several reviews on the 5dii and didn't think I would be able to pull off manual focus while trying to track a sledder. I have been dyeing to get a full frame for a few years though. 5dii and the 100-400, perfect combo.

Chuckles...I know we've talked about cameras before. I still like the 40d for what I'd use it for (The 50d is still out of my price range)...BUT that the Canon T1i has HD vid but a plastic body.

The finance committee has authorized me to pick out a camera.

In my $$ range (and feature/usage range) where would you go? Lower level Canon T1i plastic body with HD vid...or a level up Canon 40d/50d metal frame NO HD vid.???????

I'm guessing the metal body would be better for carrying for damp sledding and in a backpack???????

If your thinking the t1i because of its hd video one thing to remember is that this camera shooting in 1080p mode is only capturing 20fps. Something to consider.

Dock, tell your buddy Steve I`m a fan now after checking out his other vids on vimeo.

And what would I rather have? 100fps?

UMmmmmmmm no but 20 fps is four frames slower than what movies are shot at. The norm right now(for the most part) in consumer hd camcorders is 1080p shot at 30fps (30p)(actually it really is 29.97fps but that is getting anal) or 720p shot at 30fps(30p) or 60i(interlaced).60i(fps) will give you smoother slow motion shots. Now most of today`s camcorders/video camera`s shoot at the 24p also just because people think it will give them that movie look, but there is more to it than just 24fps.

You want to shoot fast moving objects or do fast pans at 20fps go ahead but my guess it will be jerky. You can help it out a bit by using a faster shutter speed in some cases.
Look a for used panasonic gh-1, might be just what your looking for. Great camera and from examples on youtube takes awesome video as well.
Good luck
