What happened to my piston?? (pics)

piston had some oil on it...was sticky when i took it out..maybe not enough....

"Ya, kinda like Alberta Boy's HMMMMM is right! " please explain :)

was running injection and pre mix as well...... sled is an 04 rev....RKT 827 kit....stock pipe...HPS...370/380 mains i believe....6-9k ....set up as per kelsey at RKT.

I think Kelsey will tell you that the whole "HPS" thing is what got you in trouble. His kits clearly state-Stock Cans. He finally found a can that would work with his kits last season, but HPS was not one of them.

ran stock can 2 years ago...then switched to HPS...ran for 2 years with HPS...lotsa days longer and harder than the day it seized...dont think it was the can....plugs werent bad at all either..maybe a lil rich even...
...oops didnt mean to say the HPS was as kelsey says to set up.. ..just everything else

Well I am really sorry that I ruffled your feathers.....wait on second thought I am not. Ok I may agree with you that a aftermarket can will not hurt the motor, but here is where I differ with you, given that the motor is stock! I agree we can take a stock engine and swap out the stock can with just about any aftermarket can and we probably will not notice any difference in engine operating parameters, ie; exhaust temps, piston wash or plug color. Now you try to do this while running a RKT kit and you will get into trouble. You have a engine that has been changed dramatically in efficiency. You are dealing with different combustion chambers, different pistons which also affects port timing, leaner jettting, and a raised operating RPM. Is it any wonder that engines seize when you put on a aftermarket can after changing that many variables? Don't you think Kelsey tried to run aftermarket cans with his kits? Do you think it is possible that he noticed maybe a power loss or even piston failures when he tried aftermarket cans and that is why he recommends the stock can? I have heard of guys trying the Skinz can that Kelsey now recommends and even they noticed a change in plug color versus the stock can.

I know I tried to run a "thing "can with just his head on my 800 and he told me don't do it, you will have problems. Well two days later my sled was being pulled out of the backcountry because I stuck a piston. I installed his drop in kit at that point along with the stock can, that was three years ago and my sled still runs strong.

Looks like you got it so hot you smeard the aluminum over the rings, causing no ring tension angainst cylinder wall, it's a classic "burn down" invest in a egt gauge and really watch it going home when your losing elavation and leaning her out,

id like to know what you found, my piston looks just like yours, on the pto side , going down the trail at about 7000 rpm. my sled is stock except clutching venting and a hps can. 2500 miles

one piston top has no wash at all,,,,

the top of the piston might tell you nothing as the rings have changed the way that cyl was burning before you shut it down. THe marks probably line up with cyl between the ports. leaness will have marks on the exaust side. snow on the intake side. marks on top from deto. light rubbing cold seizure, 4 corner melt alum over rings......heat from lack of oil, my guess.

thanks for all the input guys...been busy but hope to get it figured out this weekend...still waitin on the jug tho since it took a few flakes out of the nikisil :(

I am not 100% sure but there really is no such thing as too much gas/fuel, right?

I didn't think you could do damage from running rich.

What do your carb boots and reed boots look like?

I agree with you on this one.... running lean does all the damage check your carb boots thats what the piston on my 04' gade looked like and it was a peeled carb boot, the fix for that is vforce reeds they dont have a boot that will peel.
