What does detonation sound like??

Hey,

I took my 06 TM-7 with Garrett 2871 non intercooled, RG, Pure logic FI controller out yesterday,

Had a couple issues... Seems to be burning a bit of turbo oil... (read somewhere that this could cause deto)...

A couple pulls I did it would break up a bit up high in the RPM... I was running about 9-11 PSI Still would do it sometimes when I turned the boost down to 9... The sound I would compare it to is the rev limiter an my 08 M1000... It just would kind of miss and get knocked back a bit... I let the throttle off emmediatly and it would be fine... This happened prob about 4 times throughout the day, usually after I had been on it for a while prob had hotter charge air temps... My EGT's at WOT are quite low... in the 1100 range.

I know this is really weak but I don't know how to use the PL box yet... I didn't have time to study up on it before going... Printed off the instructions and figured I would learn that day if I had too... So maybe I could have added or pulled a bit of fuel at wot and fixed the problem... Has anyone experienced similar behavior with a rich condition?? The low EGT's make me think it may have been getting too much fuel... And it did seem to load up a bit after a long pull...

If this was detonation I was hearing would my motor be blown up?

Does anyone know off hand what RPM the 06 M7 rev limiter comes in at??:beer;

change your plugs !

You've had a similar experience with old plugs??
Do these things go through plugs faster on boost?
I had to close the gap a bit when I turbo'd my street bike... wonder if this should be done on these things too?....Anyone?

Tap on your motor with a hammer now take that times your rpm

How big of a hammer should I use?? LOL
Ya I guess deto sounds pretty freaken bad!!!! i need to do some homework and go out and have a tuning day with this thing... Hopefully it was just the rev limiter....:beer;

deto

The best dyno operators under ideal conditons use a special listening device to HEAR deto. On the old fan cooled sleds you could hear what sounded like what was sort of a vibrating short loose spring..... a metalic not good annoying sound as the engine drops a little rpm or as you went up past that annoying flat spot.

On the liquid sleds its mostly a feel........... a dry little vibration just as the engine goes a little flat, engine should sound greasy and smooth and running free, at deto its often running hard but you will notice an internal loss of smoothness..........like a slight drag on the motor and some handlebar vibration. Unfortunately by the time you realize this and get out of it and the engine doesn't seize you have experienced some degree of piston damage.
The first step in softening of the aluminum compostition of the piston and worn ring lands and after enough of this the ring locating pin falls out and a ring catches in the exhuast port and way not good. This often happens two rides later when you get the classic tale " I was just idleing down the trail when it let go ??? " YEAH.......tried to tell you that three weeks ago.

SO...........look at your piston crowns for signs of DETO and beware.

I posted that turbo useing oil could cause detonation. because I had ben told that on my turbo gsxr 1000.
it totally sliped my mind though that 2 strokes always burn oil. :rolleyes:
I don't know if normal automotive oil from the turbo burns different then the two stroke oil or if it makes a difference? :confused:
I havn't even started my turbo xp yet, but I already put the plug gap down a little to 25 thousandths. Just figured I would start from their. I run my turbo gsxr 1000 up to 24lbs of boost with 20 thousandths gap. after I run the sled for awhile I will try stock gap to see if it makes a difference.
I would throw new plugs in it just for the hell of it. it is some thing cheap to try. On my turbo bike I used to leave them in for awhile. I was raceing in sac once and a buddy down their said my bike didn't seem to be runing as smooth and idle was not as good and to try new plugs in it. I had forgot my box of plugs so I went in to town to get a new set. I made 4 runs that day all at around 172mph. put a new set of plugs in and did not change anything else and ran 176mph next pass.

Detonation

Yeah, it is like they say, you will feel it more than hear it, it will start to sound like it isn't running perfect, feel different in the handlebars as far as vibration. You do need to run a smaller gap on the plugs, I can't remember, seems like it was .020". If you were running that cold on your EGT's I wouldn't think you were feeling Detonation, I would say you were just running too rich. One way to check is to pull the exhaust pipe "Y" and roll the motor over and look at the piston domes, you should see where it was eroding the top of the pistons if it was having detonation, you might also see some blow-by scaring on the piston skirts if it was detonating. PM me if you have any more questions.

I had an old 600 EFI that went once, at the time I was clueless but remember the distinct sound. Sounded to me like a huge beehive full of pissed off bees in a tin can. After I heard that sound, it ran better than it ever did....for a 1/4 mile then ate sh!t.

Thanks for all the replies...!!

Some good stuff there... I have noticed that the turbo'd M's sound a bit ragged... I guess they should when you are ramming a lot more air and fuel in... I wonder if the reeds not snapping back as fast as they might on a NA engine has something to do with it??

From what you guys are saying It doesn't sound like I was experiencing deto... Thankfully!! Must just be over fueling a bit when the secondary injectors come on at WOT... I'm going this saturday with a group that won't be in so much of a hurry... Should be able to get er working a bit better...
Also going to try the plugs gapped to .20

Badass 1000... Your GSXR must be completely insane!! I was running 6 LBS on a 05 Busa and thought that was pretty fast...

Thanks again for the advise:beer;

Hey,

Got out yesterday with new plugs gapped to .020... What a differance, ran awesome... Leaned the PL box down a bit and got it working really good... Was an awesome day, had a couple sweet long up hill wheelies that I have always wanted to do... Was sweeet!!:D

I will always have extra set of new plugs on hand...
