What avy backpack would you recommend?

Air Bags

have any of you guys worn a snowpulse highmark, or The NorthFace ABS pack. How did it feel?

BCA is a great company based in Boulder, CO which is just 10 miles from me. they are the only AV pack I will use or sell!!

The float 22 is awsome and I can get them for folks here at a substantial discount if interested.

Who what where and how?

i think your wrong.

I hope so. I think it's stupid to sell a product without the integral part that makes it function.

But I know people have reported on here that they bought a NEW pack from an authroized dealer and had to buy the canister separately. The advertised price did not include the canister.

Maybe it IS just BCA, I dunno. I've just heard so many times that the canister is sold additionaly.

All of the Wary Avi packs and vests include the cylinder in the pricing.

We also carry Snowpulse, and include the cylinder in our pricing on the website. All others that I have found that sell Snowpulse, do not include the cylinder in there pricing. Our goal is to to tell you the price right out of the gate so that there is no guessing or purchasing without the necessary parts to make them operational.

Float 22 - Black
FL-12
Now available at retail stores. Please place order now for early January delivery. *Cylinder not included*
$ 499.95

Float Throttle - Black
FL-14
Now available at retail stores. Please place order now for early January delivery. *Cylinder not included*
$ 499.95

Every BCA pack comes without the cylinder now.

Obviously some retailers like Snowbigdeal aren't going to bait & switch you by not mentioning this kind of thing till after a sale (what I think the Polaris bag is doing IMO by not being clear about it) Another reason to buy from guys you can trust.

Btw, the few sites I just checked, the ABS was priced with a canister & the BCA was priced without. Seems shady to me, but that's how they want to price them I guess.

i know BCA doesn't include the canister. but according to big snow deal every other brand they sell does. bca use to include it and were $500. after the first year they said they were raising prices. so now it looks like they kept the same price and make you buy it seperatly.i know there is some problems with shipping the ABS canisters

I would think a compressed air canister is a compressed air canister? Shouldn't matter what brand it is for shipping, Hazmat charge if it's full.

I'm not sure how everyone else does it, I do know 'First Place Parts' makes it very clear in their catalog and on-line that the BCA canister is sold seperately. Just do your homework and purchase as you said from a reputable shop.

They're all good, but compare to get what you want/need

Go to <wildsnow.com> it's a web page basically for backcountry skiers and they do kick-*** reviews on equipment. They have a table that compares all the inflation devices: wt. size, company, etc. and reviews on many. BCA has sort of "stolen" the show by producing packs that are a bit less costly (considerable in some cases) than others. Others like Snowpulse have "tricks" like lets air seep out of the bag over a 15 min burial that affords you SPACE around your head which allows you to breath! A bag that stays fully inflated forever does not. Humm. Another point to consider. I'm going with the AviVest by WARY and their smaller bags are killer too. But then, I backcountry & sidecountry ski and sled so "cross dressing" (so to speak) is important to me. Ease of refill is a major consideration for some. However, I'd ask, "If you are deploying your bag that frequently, maybe you need education about where to ride more than a savior (bag)." Filling at scuba shops is handy, however, 90% of the world scuba shops are no where near biling snow and biling snow (Revelstoke) probably doesn't have a scuba shop in town. That said, it's a weird world and here in Missoula , MT we have Gull which sells Ski Doo, RV's and scuba gear. Also remember after "X" inflations, the bag is to be replaced with a new one.

As for BCA, (I get lots of hate mail from BCA fans and employees) my gripe is that they do lots of presentation/education (great)and every bit of it is like a sales pitch for their product (not so great). Let's face it the Tracker, until this new 3 antenna version was inferior to PIEPS, Ortovox and Mammut. Period. (And they certainly haven't liked my standing up and presenting the facts in the Q&A period after their presentations which I have attended.) I'm CAA Level I certified, work at a B.C. cat ski area a number of years and "taught" countless newbies how to use their beacons we gave them to wear and "use" - Ortovox, no Canadian Cat or Heli op. uses Tracker). Also, I did a 3 day full education/use program with Crystal Mtns Pro Patrol, same as the Canadian Heli and Cat Assoc. Guides go through. Trackers were good to 45 meters, my PIEPS DSP was good to 65 m. So, next time you are buried, who do you want searching for you? Yeah, Trackers were real easy to use, so are all the newer and BETTER ones. Distance of reception is critical. Think about how much more ground you cover searching with 15 to 20 meters more coverage to each side of you search pattern and how that translates to speed of finding the victim. Also, if your present beacon does have 3 antenna, toss it and buy one that does. The third antenna is critical for finding deep burials .................. just take my word for it. I'd take 3 pages to present the calculus to explain why. Lastly, if you don't ride in avi-country, don't buy one. You'll just look stupid. They are a waste of wt. and space. Sort of like taking a parachute on a car trip to the mall.

I got a PM from a mod yelling at me for posting prices for BCA products (even though a bunch of other non-sponsors are doing it for BCA beacons :face-icon-small-dis) so if anybody is looking to get some BCA products at prices a lot less than MSRP just shoot me a PM. I hope that is okay mods??
