What anitvirus to use?

For spyware I have had great results with Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and Spyware Terminator.

I would guess if you used 3 different pieces of software, you might have good success. A couple things, why would you want to run 3 app's for the same purpose, you will have conflicts of interest and if I "recall correctly", S&D is spyware itself. AdAware isnt that great anymore. It used to be pretty good but you cant expect companies to keep up to date, daily definitions, and not charge for their product. Far too much time and effort for a business, to give it away free.

I have run all three of those programs....nothing detected by either of them (that's probably why i have the 4 issues). May as well run ccleaner.... way superior to those three and at least 20 times faster. I just can't believe norton corporate edition is that inferior to yours, they update every day. How often is yours updated Opus?

I use the AVG free version, 8.0 that is out. Yes, it is a good product for the price of free, and best of all the only portion that it doesn't cover in its free version that they want you to pay for in the full blown version is covered with Windows Defender, another free service from the Microsoft site. I have not had any problems with any of my computers, currently running four different ones with this setup.

Credentials? I work for a government agency as a computer tech specialist since I was 16.

#1 Dont use Norton or McAffee
#2 This IS one case where you get what you pay for. Dont use a free AV.
#3 PM me if you want, I'll give some specifics
#4 I am an internet security consultant with clients all over the US. [in case you wanted credentials]
..Couldn't agree more.. Free is not good in this case..

Go with Trend Micro.. I'm happy as hell with it

I use Avast free edition, have been using it for years now, not one single complaint about it, updates regularly and you are in control of it. Also I love that it's not a resources hog like a lot of the other ones out there.

Thats good. I forgot to say, there is a checkbox there to check for spyware. Make sure that is checked.

I just ran AVG Free 8.0 and Spybot.

I run three apps at a time because none of them are perfect and the others will pick up things that one of them will miss. They are never running at the same time so there is no conflict. Many security experts recommend running several anti-spyware programs. Ad-Aware used to recognize Spyware S&D as Spyware but not anymore. Ad-Aware isn't as good as it used to be but it's still good IMO. CCleaner works good too, I forgot to mention that one. People buy Ad-Aware too, that's what keeps the free version going, the same with Avast antivirus.

I respect your opinion as someone that works in the field but until I have problems I'll stick with what works. I've been using computers since I was 2 years old(for almost 20 years now) and I know plenty about how viruses work, security procedures, hacking procedures, etc. I have also went to school for IT and worked in the industry. I understand that the things I use are not as "bullet-proof" as would be needed by a corporation with sensitive data to protect and if I was running my own business I would be using different products as well. But for a home user the things I have listed are more than sufficient as long as they know how to browse safely. Like I said before knowing how to browse safely will decrease the chance of getting malware by ten fold. I'm sure you know that as well working in the industry.

Using the tools I have listed and a few other tricks I have brought many computers(probably 100) from being so slow they can't even boot to better than new.

OK, here it is: scan. Download it and run it.
This will scan and detect just how well your AV program is. It will remove some bugs but not all....you have to purchase a license to have it remove everything. Not my doings, but thats just how it goes.

Just for the heck of it I tried this program to see what it would find. It found no critical errors(spyware or viruses). It did find 4 broken registry keys though.
