What age for a helmet

My little guy is almost 2. He loves to ride the sled with me, he is trying to stand on the seat of his electric 4-wheeler while he is riding it. It got me to thinking about a helmet for him. What age have some of you put your kids in helmets. We were a shop the other day and I put a youth small on him, it was big but he could hold his head up, and I thought I could put one of stocking hats underneath it if I had to. What do you all think.

buy the helmet

If they are going to be riding, they need a helmet. It is not worth the chance of an injury. My son had a helmet at 2.5. Never gets on the sleds without it and knows it.

GET HIM ONE NOW don't take the chance. Plus he will wear it all the time so he can look cool like dad. get him into the habit now.

always

started my boys out with bicycle helmets on there electric 4 wheelers now they just got gassers and reg helmets and remote shut off good thing they are all or nothing 3 and 4 and they think there evil knevil:eek:

My boys started wearing them at ages 2 & 3. Might want to skip the motocross style, or at least take the visor off. My youngest has a nasty habit of falling asleep and when his head bobs he hits the kill switch with the visor of his helmet:eek:.

we bought our 2 year old grand son a motocross helmet for Christmas. He rides mainly on the four wheelers with us

My guys were 3.5 and 4.5 when they got their true first motocross helemts. I think they would of been able to fit one a little earlier but you have to remember their necks are not very strong and with a good jolt you might hurt them. I used bicycle helemts for the first couple of years.

The neck thing is Exactly right!

Remember, they need to be able to support the helmet with those weak muscles.

Don't go too big too early.

I always did the hockey helmet thing when they were very little until they could support the heavier helmets

I'm in full agreement with kerk43 and most of the others on this one! If your going to swing a leg over a machine, helmets aren't an option, regardless of age. I know, I know.......I've been guilty of this in the past but if something ever happened I would never forgive myself. You can't replay life.

Ebay has a full assortment of nice little guys helmets you might take a look at.

You might be able to find a youth bmx style helmet. It would offer more protection then a normal bicycle helmet but not wiegh as much as a mx helmet therefore not hurting their necks.

I told my son that he wouldn't ride without a helmet on. When he was 2 he had the electric four wheeler and a bicycle helmet. When he was 3 he got the 90 cc gasser and a dot approved mx helmet. when he grows out of it he'll get another, it is the least I can do as a parent to make sure he is safe! Now he doesn't even think about it, the helmet goes on before the quad even gets started.
Just a little side note- he is mad that my four wheeler has a snow plow on it and his doesn't.......(wipe my eye).........makes a dad proud!

His mother got mad the other day cause he was building a ramp out back with some old boards and plywood. He turns 4 jan 23. His b-day was 1/23/4
As my dad puts it,"I think he got the spirit of Steve McQueen in him." Let's hope so!

If you are worried about their neck not being strong enough, get them one of those neck brace pad deals. I don't know what they are called, but the things like they use in nascar. One of the Tstruck riders uses one.

Those restrict head movement especially on the littler guys. I wanted him to learn to turn his head while he ride so it becomes natural. JMO

A simple bicycle helmet is better than nothing when they are that young. By three they are strong enough to hold up a helmet and they are already used to the feel so.......

bell makes the best little kids helmet that i have seen and the sizes go down small enough that one will fit them. very light and good construction. just thought i would let you know what ive seen to work best on the little ones.

My daughter started wearing a NFX helmet designed for kids at 3. It is a MX style helmet that can be used with a flip down visor. This seemed best for her because I can never find goggles that will work with an open face for her size.

Also the neck brace is a must...ask your pediatrican. It does not prevent them from moving their head from side to side, but does provide the extra reinforcement in case of an accident.

Got beacon for the little one as well. An avalanche could sweep over a trail at anytime, even when you think your in no danger.

Bought my girls ski helmets to use. Don't sue me but I was concerned about the weight. What good is a protected brain with a broken neck?

What? You don't care that he wears a helmet now but want to know what age you should start caring? Bottom line is that they are to young to make the choice, protect them now, you are the adult and you know the consequences. No helmet no ride. I can't tell you how many times people go by my house with a 4 wheeler with a very small kidlet in front of them and the adult has a helmet on but not the kidlet. I want to go out and choke em. Have called the law on a few and they have received tickets but the next day they are right back at it. Must really love their children!

all of our kids started out wearin hockey helmuts becuase they are light weight...don't want your kid to break his neck off because the head gear is toooo heavy and then when they got a little older I got them BMX full facers works very well and can still wear goggles..

we got ours one when he was 3, bought it a few sizes to big and made him ware a stocking hat for hopes to wear it awile, he's 6 and it still fits.
