western destinations

Looking to plan a trip out west next years with the guys. Any recommendations on where to go? Thinking West Yellowstone or Togwotwee but I am open to ideas. We are from northern Wisconsin and have a lot of trail experience, unfortunately not enough snow in the past few years. I would like some guided boondocking and some trail riding. Someone said West Yellowstone was slow trail riding?? Not a fan of speed limits. Lodging ideas with driving rentals from lodge? Any other recommendations? Thinking 4-6 guys

Thanks

Tog can be a blast if you are looking for the Semi-Remote lodge experience. About 1 hour from "civilization"
1 Restaurent
1 Gas Station
1 Mini Mart.
Loads of very fun riding when the snow is good.

If your looking for a Mountain Community feel try Island Park
If you want all the amenities of a small city, try West Yellowstone.
They are for the most part the same over all riding area, just two sides of the same mountain, one more developed than the other.

Both have something on the order of 600-800 miles of groomed trails and the same amount of ungroomed trails, and then about 125 SqMiles of unrestricted mountain riding off trail.

Check these out for more info

Both are good options but I would recommend Togwotee. Huge trail system that is well marked and frequently groomed. Wide variety of terrain. Ride right from your door at Togwotee Mountain Lodge. Restaurant, bar, gas, rentals, guides, and hot tub on site.

West Yellowstone and Island Park are great too but it seems like we always find ourselves riding alot of trails to get to the good stuff and the trails can be brutal.

And when is the best time to go?

Another option is Union Pass, between Dubois and Togwotee. It is on the East end of the Togwotee trail system. Crooked Creek Guest Ranch has nice cabins, bar, and restaurant. There are also rental properties on Union Pass where your group could have a house to yourself.
