West Yellowstone?

I am starting to plan our 2nd trip out west. We went to Togwotte last year and loved the terrain but i am not fan of the lodge. I carry lunch pail to work not a briefcase. Anyway we were looking into West Yellowstone a a place to stay and play in the steep and deep. We were wondering what your opinion is. I don't want to break the bank on this. I can take the whole family to Disney world for $1600 there is no reason should have to spend $2500 to go out west and ride a sled on public land.....so with the rant done....Is West a good destination. Guide service? ..........thanks in advance for all of your great help!!!!

Call Kurt at GoldenWest Motel...he is a great guy, and if you stay with him, he will likely guide you (might have to buy him a beer though) and he has a great shop in case anything goes boom...

He is reasonable, and most importantly is insanely accomodating...send him a PM or go to his site... http://www.goldenwestmotel.com/

GW is great as well as Pine Shadows, we stayed there last year and their guides (Ace Powder Guides) are top notch.

My buddy knows the owner of High country snowmobiles and rental so we were riding with one of his guides (Taylor) on his off day for tips and beer. Either way you go it's a great area for riding if the bunny humpers don't get everything shut down.

west is the spot for me. been going there since 1991. comfort inn if you want a pool or if you like too party with some good peeps(kurt & shell). and have a guide or a warm shop then goldenwest is for you. they also have some condos for a bigger group.
also check out Mt sec and click on INVITING ALL SNOWMOBILERS TO W. YELLOWSTONE

Have you considered going to Island park and staying at the Sawtail in? It is a fun ride to west from there and the riding in the area is some of the best in the west. Just a thought

We stayed @ the Goldenwest this year and it couldn't have been better as far as people, facilities etc. Kurt and Shel will go out of their way to help you. Just be careful when you ride with Curt ;)

I found West Yellowstone to be a double edged sword. I liked being close to the stores/restaurants etc but I prefer a more isolated setting like Island Park where there are far less people. We found ourselves riding in IP almost every day.

One of the reasons we want to go to west Yellowstone is that we have been told that there is a lot of people there but most of them are there to ride the park or the trails and that there is actually surprisingly few boondockers there. ONE of the problem we had at Togwotte this year is that everything was run into the ground from the 3 million visitors that are all there to do the same thing.....Boondock. You could have rode a dirt bike most of the places we went.

X2 on the Goldenwest, great people, a shop for repairs if needed and parties in that shop nightly.

The only negative I found in West Yellow was Rental sleds, lots of them all on the wrong side of the trail.....not all but most of them.
When you see rented suits and helmets along with a rented sled. Pull over.

It can get busy in west also, more sleds then togwotee usually. It all depends when the last good snow was. We have hit it real good at both places, have been screwed a couple times to. We have been staying in island park the last 5 years. Usually less people. Always end up in west once or twice for pizza at wild west during the week. Hear nothing but good things about goldenwest though, even had a beer with him at Einos one time.

Early to mid January is a good time to go to Yellowstone. Lots of folks ride there over the New years weekend and either take a break the next 2 or ride locally.

Check us out if you havn't already made plans. www.hicountrysnowmobile.com We have some New, and really nice condos, good running rental sleds (ski-doo 800's), and we can take you into the backcountry legaly, set you up with all of the avalanche gear, and have a short lesson on avalanche dangers and resuces.... Most people after a day guided leave stoked and with the knowledge to feel comfortable on their own for a few days in our awesome backcountry... West is a great choice though, no matter where you stay, the trails can get a little rough from hundreds of rental sleds, but get out into the mountians, you may not see another group all day, especially with us ;)

Might look at the pines in Island Park, they rent cabins so you can cook and save cash that way and You have some of the best areas in IP right there at your disposal. Advice I would give to most people that want to got to that area.

We trailered all of our short track machines from Chicagoland to West Yellowstone in 1988, 2002, 2004, 2005. Budget was approx $1200-1500 per man based on 3-4 guys/sleds going. We prefer to go the last weekend of January /Superbowl weekend.

We prefer to stay @ Days Inn, (they have a new and older section) across from POLARIS WEST, same owner Gale Archer, he cut us a great deal on Rental sleds and a guide for 1 day into the park knowing we had trailered our sleds there. Guide was approx $ 125.00 per day.

Bullwinkles, the best food in town. The PONDS when going South a little. Stagecoach used to have live entertainment, I heard that's gone for a while now.

We're waaaaaayyyyyy over due for a trip out west, hopefully February 2010.

Hope this info helps, have a great trip!!!

well, ive been goin to west for about 7 or 8 years now (all the way from florida).. kurt and shel are great people!! they can accomodate you wether you just want a place to sleep or would prefer top notch condos or rental homes.. if kurt isnt riding, he will let you know who is, most likely you could tag along..

as far as sled rentals, been using bob from snowfun snowmobile rentals for 8 years!! dont get any better than this!! never had a problem whatso ever! unbelievable service and great deals..

MT powder guide AKA Taylor? X100 on Pine shadows and high country rentals. Last year was the 1st time ever out west and were already planning on going back. I really cant say enough good things about this spot. Chad n Mallory owners of the hotel n condos and Jeff owner of hi country were all great. These guys are truly hardcore. When I talked to Jeff I told him we were some flatlanders from PA and I wanted to drop off small cliffs haha. He told me he would set up us with a guide and we could pretty much go at it. lol Our Guide Taylor had us in Fresh unmarked snow everyday and it was in March. We also met a group of guys from Seattle WA area that said they have been going there for like 15 years or something so it seems like they have a good following.

lol, yeah, this is Taylor, really glad ya had a good time!!! And thanks for the good word, much appreciated. Yeah Mike, we will be at haydays. my boss goes every year but im planning to go for the first time too. Look us up if your there, or i can try to let ya know where we are, we would love to chat with ya and show ya what we can offer.

We have been there twice, We stayed at 3 Bears lodge both times. Part of one of theose package deals ie Sleds, lodging, meals. Both times were great and so was the service. Food at the 3 Bears Cafe' was awesome. JMO
