was 05/06 rmk 900 anniversary 166 really a prototype flop??

I'm looking into purchasing a 2005 RMK 900 166 anniversary and all the reveiws I could find are saying some bad things about this sled so I'm wondering if they are true? Is it really a high maintenance sled and have a bunch of recalls?? The guy selling it only rode it 200 miles as second owner (2000 total miles) and doesnt want it and says he has no clue what I'm talking about so I'm not sure if the recalls and updates were done or not or if I should take the gamble or not? Any suggestions or advice? I guess the clutch constantly needs balanced so ya don't break the crankshaft and things like that? Don't have a lot of money to fix it all the time if its true I'd rather buy a lower maintenance more reliable sled I think. I'm just totally not ure what to do at this point.

As someone who has owned an 05 166 for the last 3 years, I would say they were not a flop at all. The basic design of the sled isn't bad, it's just heavy and requires some special attention in setting it up in several areas. If you are unsure of what recalls and updates have been performed, take the vin number to your local Polaris dealer and they should be able to tell you what has been taken care of on it.

If you want to get into much more specific detail, head over to the Polaris 900 forum and do some reading... there are several stickies with LOTS of good info on setup, maintenance, and repair and how to make a 900 as reliable as any other sled out there.

I wouldn't say that they need constant attention, but you shouldn't be afraid to get your hands dirty with initial setup and regular maintenance type stuff. My 05 and my buddies 06 have both proven to be reliable rides, even with higher mileage.

yikes! weigh that bad boy then rethink it!

If your not into spending lots of time and money wrenching to keep it going pass on it. the 05 900 166 is HEAVY as hell! when they run correctly they can be a good sled I owned a couple with all the goodies/fixes and they were OK ,but just OK. they can make good power and awsome torque compared to an 800 but are definetly higher maintenance than almost any sled I can think of .

Just reading the 4M it gives you an idea of how much work it takes to make that a good sled. The only way that guy doesn't know this is if he is not the least bit in touch with the sledding world.

If you want a pull and go sled don't go with it. Now I only say this cause you say you don't have the money to do all the updates to make it a relieable machine.

How much money could you get it for? That would help us determine what other sled you could get that would be better. Without a price, its tough to help. Generally, I would stay away from them.

A Polaris rep back in '06 was qouted as saying something like this, "it is simply to expensive for us to continue to produce and warranty the 900. Economically, it would kill us". That being said, Polaris was really hurting at that time and who really knows the answer? I have seen a lot of 900 RMK up at the Range "getting it done"
