Warning! About totaled my new XP from SLP

After consulting several people "including SLP" about how to get more air into the XP. They said do not touch the lower air box but rather to put two, SLP's in the upper air box below the headlight assembly. I did and it's been working great for about two weeks. Then, without warning while breaking trail with some friends, the throttle stuck near full throttle, the sled went balls-to-the-wall across a ravine and took out a tree full bore!!!! After close inspection from my dealer, we found an "ear" from the back of an SLP vent broke off and got sucked into the carb jamming it open not letting the slide drop!!! I hope SLP helps me with the cost of repairs. They never say "do NOT use in airbox". They were even the ones that told me to do it!!! Help!!!!

Wow that sucks. Usually companies have a written Limited Liability Warranty only covering the cost of their product. They usually go on to say they do not cover any subsequent or collateral damage.

Maybe the sled insurance will pay?

Can you say the piece broke off when it hit the tree and ran a few seconds and was then lodged into the carb? In other words the accident caused SLP component to break and something else caused the carb to stick open?

I hate to be a dick, but you should have worn your tether cord... Not sure it this would have happened with it on. I always tell people to use it.. Sorry about the wreck though.. I too have flowrites in my airbox... I might look into it.. thx for the post..

I have a buddy who had 2 SLP Florights in the back of his airbox. 1 of them got sucked into the airbox, and into his carb. It wasn't pretty. I just put some of the SLP material over a couple 1" holes.

You're right 100% I was not wearing my cord. In the trees steep and deep it's a real pain in the $#^%$&* I guess I'll have to get used to it. It would have killed it ond saved the day for sure...

I used the rubber grommet mount ones with the aluminum ring in them.
I dont think you would have this problem with them.
I also put them in the top under the guage pod.

Sorry about your sled that sucks.

Hmmm, I have them installed in my box too. The dealer put them in as a warranty thing, no charge. No problems as of yet but I'll check into it.

Sorry to hear about that. I took my XP head on into a tree on my first ride ($3100 damage!). I have worn my tether ever since.

There's been a lot of XP's with sticking throttles. Are you sure the dealer isn't covering his azz. If you look on this thread you will see a post titled (xp throttle sticks). Read it and you will find most people had the problem in deep powder, including me. I called my dealer to let him know about it. If it happens again and I total out my sled at least I'm on record.:eek::eek:

Found it!

We had jack-shaft out, carbs off, reeds out and there it was. The rest of the SLP venty. One big piece in the left carb and some small pieces in the reed block. Teather cord or no teather cord. Beware of eating SLP vents and trashing your engine!!!

No offense donbrown but.....

Straightline Performance and Starting Line Products are 2 different companies(SPI vs SLP)....I'm guessing Starting Line Products will have a similar disclaimer though.

I don't see why SLP should pay for this.

Did it "break" off or was it not installed properly and fell off? I don't see how it can break off. What sort of impact would cause it to break off?

2 kinds of SLP flow-rites

I've found out about everyone with the snap-in vents with those plastic fingers have them loose fingers and fall out. SLP told me "vibration" is enough to brake those fingers and those vents should not be used where there is vibration.????? I had to laugh out loud. "snowmobiles vibrate" duh, not to mention whe pound them through the whoops down the trail at full therottle getting to our rideing areas, then we're cliff dropping, jumping, and pounding them hard all day. "vibration" ? ha! Well, lesson learned. I will be installing the rubber grommet type with aluminum ring.

Mine just broke today!! Thanks SLP!!!

Yes, they break. No, there is no way they can get impacted behind the airbox. Luckily my belt strings pulled out and while I was down there replacing it today I checked them (as I always do now after hearing about this pos product from slp). One was missing so I pulled the airbox out. Luckily I found all the hard plastic peices. No sign of the soft material though. I was looking at the other flow rite and sure enough--one of the little plastic pieces on the back was missing. Found it in my airbox luckily. What a crappy product. 40 bucks for two of them and they break in less than a month and almost destroy my engine. Thanks SLP. I might understand if they were 5 bucks a piece but at 20 you kind of expect them not to be the cheapest plastic on the market. Duck taped the holes and went home. Awesome day.

Wow - sorry to see another mtn-doo get his sled tree-wrapped. I don't see how you could hold SLP to the block on that one though. Best of luck!
