Warm Lake to Stanley

Not sure about exact miles but plan for around 70 to 80 miles and the trail is groomed about 95% of the way. The summit before you drop into Deadwood is prone to slides so they don't take the groomer down there very often and the groomer from Stanley turns around at Deadwood lodge. The lodge is open for fuel and burgers but bring some cash... 6.00 a gallon for fuel.:face-icon-small-sho
We always go in from Lowman and it's the same mileage... we do about 30-40 miles of trail and 30 miles of playing in the trees.

I'm a little worried about my range. With the supercharger I'm pretty hard on fuel. The best I've managed was 75 miles with a whopping 6 of that off trail. I doubt the fuel at the lodge is 91 octane, anyone know where I can find Torco accelerator in Boise?
 
Drop an email to the lodge... not sure what the address is but they have a web site and that's how I contacted them in the past and they were pretty quick. http://www.deadwoodoutfitters.com . When I was there early in the season for a burger I remember them saying it was premium.

If the trail is groomed then you might be close but you'll miss out on a lot of fun boondocking. My Turbo Apex gets pretty good range when I'm not climbing big hills. I rode with some D8's and M8's and I used the same or a little less then them. I did carry 2.5 extra as a buffer.
 
Yeah, Extreme is right. It is about 80 miles (about 55 miles to highway 21 @ Boundary Creek and then about 25 miles into Stanley from there. It would be tough to keep to the trail and not hit some of those meadows. I could easily see you putting on over 100 miles for this little jaunt.
 
What is the best way to get to this trail?

If you tag is correct and you will be coming in from the Boise area, the best would be as Extreme said. Come in from Lowman. It is about an hour and a half to the trail from Boise. Once you hit Deadwood, you can continue on to Warm Lake or head east toward Bear Valley and on to Stanley. I grew up in the Stanley area, so I am more familiar with the Bear Valley and Banner Summit area. I have never sledded up from Lowman side or on to Warm Lake, but I hear that it is great. I have driven it in the summer and can see why.

There are endless possibilites up there, but it is big country as well. Packing extra fuel is alway a good idea.

I emailed the lodge and they do sell gas, but it is $6 a gallon and not the octane I need, so I don't think I'll buy any unless I have to. I will definitely be stopping for lunch at the lodge.

I always carry 2 gallons with me, and I think I'll add 2 gallons on my wife's sled (mtn max 700 that gets 110+ miles to a tank).

Is the trail well marked?

Is the trail well marked?

It follows the existing roads and is groomed, so it should be easy to follow. Most of the major intersections have signs and milage information. I would spend a little time on Google Earth or some other mapping site (google maps or even mapquest show these roads) to get a general idea of where things are.

Same with what the others are saying...if you go in on a sunny day it's very obvious but if it gets foggy or stormy it can be somewhat confusing on your first run or your fifth if you're like me. Getting the foundation of your trip mapped out is a huge plus. Also note this is one of the epic open rolling hill open meadow rides (Bear Valley plus the areas once you've crossed HWY21 and are within a few miles of Stanley) in the entire world. It's all a ways out from any civilized stop so take as much fuel as you can carry and enjoy. Just bombing in and out is a total waste of one of our true sledding gold mines. Hopefully you will hit it prime time and then you will see what I mean.

What octane do you require? There is an option of straight Toluene mixed with what you can find in the pump but it's nasty stuff and should be handled carefully as an octane booster. I have a index formula that will determine the required %'s for a given octane if you want to try it. IE 2 gallons of that will extend your range significantly further then simply the fuel you pre-mix and drag along. Do you have fuel waiting up in Stanley?

Toluene is 114 oct so for me at an expected requirement of 93.9 oct I've got to run 1.3 gallons of Toluene to 9 gallons of 91.
 
I've ridden Lowman to Stanley many times as a kid and I have mapped out the route from Warm Lake on Google Earth.

Regarding fuel, I only need 91 octane, and I will be carrying nearly 5 extra gallons, so I'm not too worried about range at this point. The lodge has 89 octane, which would work in a pinch, but I honestly don't think I'll need it.

And yes, I do plan on tearing up some meadows and hills on the way!
