wanting to move west. have some questions

if you don't go now, you never will. do it before you have a good paying job, wife, & bills or you'll never go. there's a lot of us kicking ourself in the *** because listened to family and didn't leave when we had the chance.

good luck.

Go for it, if not you will regret it. I actually like Maine. Spent a lot of time as a kid in Pittsburg, NH area. Good riding and no people.

it sounds like you are in perfect situation to pack up and head west. when i turned 20, i bought a 30-day, round trip airline ticket from idaho falls to anchorage. i was very lucky to land a job in the oilfield the second week i was there and that 30 day ticket turned into almost 30 months. apart from being a father, that was the best experience of my life. working 16-20 hour days for 21 days in a row with no sunlight for 3 months during the winter and constant temperatures of -50 below was a real awakening but i wouldnt trade it for anything and certainly makes me appreciate what i have today. Plus the caliber of people i met in alaska was great. lots of guys that like to drink beer and work hard-my kind of people. i finally had to grow up and move back to idaho for family reasons but living here is good. we have a low cost of living, steady economy and some of the best riding in the west. construction has slowed down here but it has kind of helped weed out the bottom feeders and good workers are always needed around here. i have A LOT of friends in the construction and excavation business that are always looking to replace their weakest link. i'm sure that they would help out a fellow snowester, if possible.

Pick a place where the Wind doesn't blow 60 MPH day after day. I hate the wind this time of year. It can drive a person crazy and if it wasn't for snowmobiling I woud pack up and leave.

haha...guessing you live on the south eastern part of the state?!!!;):beer;

I am 24, work for my dad in the excavation business in Minnesota, got married this summer and my wife loves snowmobiling, mountains and outdoors just as much as I do. Im in the works of taking over my dads construction company and between that and getting married to my awesome wife this past summer I say to you "GET IN YOUR TRUCK AND GO"!!!!! I would have left with one or the other, but I now have 2 things holding me in MN. O yea, and a house. that makes 3 things. My hope now is to make enuf money to buy a townhouse or appartment or cabin of some kind so I can hopefully live there most of winters! But thats pretty far fetched. If you get close to Minnesota swing in for a night and have a few beers, we have 3 spair bedrooms and a warm shop full of snowmobile stuff and a tank full of gas to help you out!!!!!

Thanks for all the good words! I'll keep everything ive read hear in mind. The talk with the parents was encouraging and hard at the same time. You see I have a great oppurtunity here with our company but my parents know how much this means to me. My old man told me there will always be a job for me here but if this is something I want than I should give it a shot.

Looks like its time to research specific towns. If you read this and have a place in mind just post the name of the town and the state and Ill look it up.
I've got a couple months to make that decision.

Thanks everyone again. This kind of thread says a lot about the good people of this forum. Many say snowest is no good anymore but I think under the right circumstances good threads do happen!

i wouldn't do it. i'am in the same position you and mob sledder are in. me and my dad own excavating buissnes together. i geuss it really depends on the relationship you have with your old man. he won't be around forever. personally i would just take more trips out west and stay at home, best of both worlds. stay close to the tit that feeds ya

I live in Fort Collins,CO a great place ,but I'm hoping to move up to Steamboat soon. I just love it up there! I think there construction is slowing ,but less than the front range.

Check it out for a while and if its not for you you can always go back.

On the flip side learning business from family is valueable and you can take those skills with you someday. Good luck with what ever you choose!

$17-$18 for crap work (no skills necessary) is pretty easy to find. Pinedale is small, but livable. As with all boom areas, prices tend to be on the high side. Good riding up in the area. Kid that loads my truck w/ condensate every day came from Cali just a few months ago, so it's quite doable.

HOLY CRAP....

I work for Ultra Petroleum in their corporate office:):):)

Funny!!

i did the exact opposite of what you are thinking i moved to maine write after high school not by choice the coast guard sent me there but it was a nice place to live met my wife there and moved back west. weve ben together now 20 years wouldnt move back to maine the west has way to much fun to offer and the hunting is far better. just do it you wont regret it.and who knows your dad may just move his buisness to where you are when they come visit and get a taste of the west. good luck with your decision

http://www.archcoal.com/aboutus/careers.asp I will say the coal mines around Gillette pay well but housing is through the roof. Was bad when I was there. 2yr wait to build a house and oftern just as long to buy or rent. often a dive apt went for nearly $1000. everything located 2-4hrs away. And I've heard it's gotten worse. My brother got laid off from a job after 15yrs with Raven in Sioux Falls SD. Considered commuting with another guy from SF that works at Black Thunder and live in a camper 2wks A shot. Drove out there last week and they are holding back until after the first of the year. Good luck.
