Wanting to move out west

So, I've decided to take the winter off from working the rigs and want to relax and enjoy life while i'm still young for a winter. I'm wanting to move out west in the mountains or just outside the mountains. I've been looking at jobs and housing for the past month or so and it's very hit or miss. I want to move somewhere where there's good sledding, I don't know how to ski or snowboard so that doesn't interest me at all. What i'm asking is, where would be a good town(not large city) to look at that has great riding(beginners for if friends and girlfriend want to ride, and more challenging riding for when i get comfortable), decent rent for a house(not looking for dirt cheap to rent a shack, but not looking to give my left arm for a mansion), and good job opportunities(Labor and equipment operation).

Looking for more so around the eastern side of BC so i'm a little closer to home if i need to head home for something that i can drive and not take 2 days to get home.

Some places that have interested me are Revelstoke, not the best for jobs from what i've been seeing, Fernie, not the best for renting, Cranbrook, not the best for jobs, Banff, not much of either.

Any pointers are appreciated!

Golden is a real nice town, great sledding in the area and there is work in the lumber industry and the railroad.

It's a lot more affordable to live there also.

Thank you, i will look to see what i can find in Golden. I'm looking to stay there from November 1st till April, But if i like it, i will stay for longer. I have a summer job here in Saskatchewan, but if i find something that's better i will stay there.

SMOKING DAVES SPOT ON. ME AND THREE FRIENDS RENTED A HOUSE IN GOLDEN FOR 6 MONTHS LAST WINTER AND WAS EPIC. DEEP SNOW GOOD PEOPLE CHEAP RENT:becky: GO TO GOLDEN CHECK THE LOCAL BULLITIN BOARDS FOR A PAD AND THE WORK WILL FOLLOW. GOOD LUCK

Thanks everyone, i'm going to look more into Golden, found an acreage that i might look into, being from a farm, i don't think i could get use to the city life. Plus gives me the option to ride straight from the house. Having a barn/shop is a must for me. I do all my own work on my truck/sled and everything in between i would love to have a man cave to get away from the old lady. haha

Found a place in Golden that i'm going to rent out, just finishing up the deal with the owners.

Still looking for work though. Not having much luck. I'm not a cook/maid so there's not much jobs around haha

Thanks, I'm wanting to do an Avalanche Course, where could one do the course, looking to get it done in November. Before i go crazy and go out almost every day sledding.

There is a place on Golden called Hangfire,I have for the last two years have put together a date with these guys.
They are sledders, best people to learn from in my opinion.
November maybe to early though to get the best conditions for training, we usually do our coarse in late December or January when there is lots of layers.

Reason I want to do the course early is so that I get the knowledge. Even if someone would just take the time to explain to a flatlander the basics. I want to know more then I do now when I go out, for my own safety and others I may be riding with.

Read everything you can on avalanche.ca you should be able to get the basics down before even taking a course. Also, find some buddies to get out with, and make sure YOU and THEM both know how to use your beacons properly. Your in avalanche central there.. You'll probably want to get a GPS, as those mountains are very remote and if clouds roll in you really can't just feel your way out.

Best of luck!

I agree! Too bad the people I was going to rent a house from decided to return me my deposit and rent it to someone else, now two weeks from when I was going to move in I'm out of a house... Now to start the search over again.

Good luck and keep lookin, you'll love it in Golden. Sleddin paradise...

Yeah, i'm going to keep looking. Hopefully there's something that i would like come up pretty soon. Anyone know of a place? Small house 1 or 2 bedroom, and heated garage?

Yeah, tell me about it! Now i have to waste time to try and find another place. Hopefully soon so i can start work again right when i get there. I get laid off on oct 27. I don't want to be out of work too long. EI isn't my thing.

Ippie the mine industry is booming in sparwood and its ez money, apply to drive haul truck at the mine is over 30buck an hour only 4days on 4 off, cost of living is aint bad cuz its not a ski town, you can prolly get a house with garage pretty easy since there is a lot of housing development going on here . I'm born and raised in sask and moved here for the good jobs, good sledding, you got the mountains on the back porch and the priairies on the front porch

I've already found a place in Oyama in the Okanogan, but i will apply anyways, in case things change.

Thanks for the post. I'm from south eastern Saskatchewan how about yourself?
