Voltige reg

Well the voltige reg went out on my 98 rmk so i was told to run a artic cat reg. I did this and it worked great tell last ride, i fired the sled and no lights or tach again. The wires coming off the reg were hot and if i unplug them i get everthing back but im afraid i will blow bulbs with running it unpluged. So does anyone know why i am burning up regs?

Reg

I just fixed a 01 that had smoked 2 regs and numerous bulbs and hand warmers. Ended up being a rubbed wire under the seat. Get your ohm meter out and probe the yellow wire by the reg. At idle you should see 13-14 volts AC, yes AC. Bring the RPM up and if the voltage drops under 12 then you have a short some where. Without the reg plugged in you will see 30+ at idle. When it works right you will see 12-14 at idle and 14 or so above idle. System needs a little load on it to work right so unplug 1 thing at a time. Try hood harness then handle bar heaters and then lift the seat and unplug the connector under the seat. The one I fxed had just a flat spot rubbed on the wire but it was enough that when the RPM came up it would short through the thin insulation on the rub.
Hopefully you will find something similar. I also had a 02 with cold solder joints on the terminals in the stator. Resoldered and fixed that one. If you don't find a wire problem then that's where I would look next and of course the wires coming out of it.
