Any one use voip and sat internet

Does anyone use any of the voip such as vonage over a satellite internet connection Ive heard they work and they dont? Anyone have experiences with this

eeeehhhhh..... don't know that I'd do that. Thing is with satellite... The bandwidth isn't bad, but there's a ton of latency. There's a big delay between the time you send the request and the time it starts downloading, but once it downloads it goes pretty quick. For web browsing and email, it's great... for more "live" things like chat or especially gaming, it's terrible. With VoIP being rather high-bandwidth and low latency, i'd expect a lot of dropped packets over a satellite connection.

I've used VoIP and satellite internet, but never two at once.... so the above comment doesn't mean a whole lot.

If you've got some $ and need decent internets, might look into frac T1...

To really diagnose if this would be a good choice for you we'd first need more info. Mule is correct, latency can be a very big issue for VOIP. I work for a local phone company and have just finished our upgrade of our VOIP network and so far I'm very pleased with our results. As a test I've set up a line on a 3mb wireless connection that shoots two miles down the columbia river to make the connection. So yes its possible, but you'd need to be patient and accept it may not work. If you you're willing to work with a local telco you may be able to find one willing to cut you a deal for testing with them. Little phone companies like the one I work for don't get this far without having test monkeys.
