Verizon cell phone internet

My cell phone contract is up and I get credit for a new phone. I know that some phones have wireless receivers in them.
Can these phones have the wireless without paying for the data plans?

You can use the internet on them without buying a data package, unless you get a Blackberry or other "smartphone", but you will be charged for each time you use it and it adds up fast.

What I meant was...My boss has a I-phone that can pick up wireless signals like a laptop(There is no reception for ATT or whatever I-phones use in that area) Can any of the Verizon phones pick up a signal like that without paying for the data plan?

If you pick up a phone that has WiFi you will be able to surf the internet without the need for a data plan I believe.

Lots of hot spots with WiFi, if you have a wireless router you can connect to that too, or any that are open.

Use it a lot on a T Mobile G1.

Verizon will do everything they can to keep a manufacturer from including wifi so they have to buy the data plan. Samsung told them to pound sand across the board, start there for wifi enabled Verizon phones like the Omnia. Blackberry Storm does Not have wifi, but the 8530 is supposed to. Don't be surprised if Verizon rolled out software to cripple any of them in the future.

Verizon also disables the GPS, and 'hides' the tethering feature in Windows 6.1

In my opinion they are all scrambling right now to figure out how they will make money in the future, cheap calls and texts are on the way and they are fighting it tooth & nail.

I believe the HTC touch from verizon has WiFi, also my old Samsung i760 had Wifi...that was a really good phone the only reason I got rid of it was because I have a smartphone for work and there was no reason to have two. Also any smartphone can be used as a modem but thats an extra cost from Verizon on top of the data package. I dont know if u can use it for a modem with WiFi....im sure someone has gotten it to work. Alot of the new phones come with data packages that allow you to use the internet and emial for like an additional $20 mo. When i had a smart phone I bucked up and payed the $35 for the data package becasue with any smart phone text and pic msg will come in as "data". So you get charged per msg size not the normal text msg fee like a normal phone....so if you do any texting you pretty much need the data package. In my oppion, if you need a smartphone....you need a datapackage. If you want to surf the internet at wifi hotspots, get a palm pilot or iPod touch.
