depending on the make, some clutch materials are prone to drying out in the clutch packs, seen it many times from sitting for a while on certain brands, also seals can do the same.

In 1984 my brother bought a old 67 firebird that had been sitting in a pasture for 10 years. We got it running but it would shift.., we kept pouring tranny fuild thru it, finally it cleaned up enough that it would shift..., he drove it for years with no problems.

What kind of vehicle is it, 96 -97 what?

Transmission seals will harden if they set for along time especially if they set in a place that gets real cold or hot for extended periods of time.

It would probably be a good idea to remove the pan on the trans you want to put in and see how much clutch material or particle are in the pan before installing since it is a used unit. and if the trans set with not being sealed up like the filler tube hole , that bugs or things didn`t make it into the pan. I have seen this many times on transmissions that set around.

If you decide to just put it in, at least install a filter kit and bu a bottle of Trans X it is a fluid additive made to soften seals back up. works pretty good.

How do you know the tc or I supose you mean Torque Converter was slipping, cause most the time if the Pump if failing and can`t fill the converter that is usually the most likely problem than the converter of you just had a set of burned clutchs or clutch pak.

Good Luck, Darren

it was throwing a tc slip code if i towed somthing up a hill was the only time it ever did it. it did it 3 times then i upgraded. each time i take it to the parts store they would read the code (same code every time) reset it and it would be fine till i towed somthing up a hill again.

i will change the fluid and filter and add the trans x stuff. then i might be fine???

Tranny will probably be fine, but the lockup clutch in the converter is probably glazed over now, you can probably have it rebuilt for about $150, or just slap a new converter in it. The problem isnt gunna go away.

Where do you get a converted rebuilt for $150 when a rebuilt one is over $250 shop price for a stock one? especially if its a diesel it almost doubles, I just bought one for customeres trany I am buildingnow and it is a billet lid and dual disc and it cost $450 +tax and shipping my cost along with a 100-150 core charge on the HD ones.

just did my 98 work truck, it was actually $134 rebuilding mine. If you have a decent tranny shop they can open the converter on a lathe, install a new lockup clutch, prep the surfaces, this also included welding up a tab internally that is prone to breakage, and rewelding the converter backup, about 1-1.5 hrs and next to nill in parts.

Have bought billet cover converters, lower stall's, bigger cu. inch lockup clutch suface furnaced brased stators and so on for high 200's brand new after core exchange.

but I have also spent big money (1200-2000) on converters for my trucks as well.

Yes these are diesel transmissions.

I was hoping you were talking about this kind of tranny and not a tranni. Last theing I wanted to hear was you picked up some older transvestite that had been laying around for a while:D

thanks guys!!!!! i will be using a diffrent converter so that part will be fixed!!! thanks for all the help!!!!

and sawyer you need to see a doc!!!! your a sick man LOL
