used '13 Pro, how many miles is too many?

Hey guys, I have been searching on here and read a few threads on what to look for in used Pro's but my biggest concern is mileage on these sleds.

I am a Doo guy and know he in's and out's of those sleds but have a buddy who is selling his '13 with about 1200 miles on it. He can't ride this year. I have read lots of bashing on these motors. I ride over 1000 miles easy a season so am I setting myself up for disaster?

I was hoping this would be a good buffer sled until any bugs are worked out of any changes to the upcoming '16.

thanks

I had a 13 Pro and put 1300 miles on it in one year. Not a single problem only blew one belt. Still has original quick drive belt to.

All depends on the previous owner.

Was it maintained well/often... how hard was it ridden/crashed?
Lightly used mostly on the trail or mostly throttle to the bar deep snow riding?

Good gas used? Oil? Premix or turned up oil pump... Were the clutches kept clean, exhaust valves cleaned... What warranty is left on it?

All important questions... Mileage on a mountain-sled could be a poor solo indicator of condition.

All in all...The 2013/14 engines have very few reported issues on them on the these forums compared to the previous years. If there WERE problems.. these very forums would be flooded with complaints about the 2013 engines and I've only seen a few complaint threads.

I just did some motor work on a 14 with 2600 miles on it in one year. Sled has been pounded on and put away wet. Guy never done any maintenance on it and the pistons were collapsed .002 I was very suprised to see that small of a variation on a 2600 mile piston. Engine looked like brand new inside. Only reason he tore it apart was for porting.

I am really suprised as this sled is from a guy that blew 5 2011 motors in one year. Traded the sled and got a 12 that he blew up 4 times. Now he has a 14 that is going strong so polaris has really stepped up their game over the years so I wouldnt be worried a bit about a 13 or later motor not lasting a season. One thing to remember is if man made it, it can be broke!

Thanks for the quick feedback.

I have decided after looking at how heavily discounted the left over 2014's are to consider that route instead, 3 year warranty is hard to say no to.

The '13 would have been a decent sled, the guy rode it like a mountain sled. I know how hard I am on mine and I don't think he abused his. Both of my Doo's, ptek and etec needed motors at 3000 miles. That was a lot of hard miles.

I would rather the nice white LE he has but will settle for the regular red if I do decide to get a '14.

I think it's more about hrs on the engine rather than miles

I think it's more about hrs on the engine rather than miles

how do you compare the two?

i look at both hrs and miles but have to make assumptions. i feel like if you can multiply the number of hours by 10 and end up with a number greater than the miles, then the sled was probably either warmed up consistently or ridden at less than WOT mostly. That's my own opinion and I'm curious to see if anyone else has a theory on hrs vs miles.

sorry for the temporary derail.

How could you tell what higher hours or lower hours meant?
Ratio wise.
Long warm ups / high speed trail could equal
Short warm ups / wot thru the trees in the deep.

I would have to start it up to see for sure but I think my '13 Pro is around 80 hours and 1200 miles. I do the full on warm up routine and I always let it run little on a re-start to stabilize coolant temps. The reality is, this probably only ads half an hour per ride over not obsessing over the temp gauge.

The real difference is riding. Sleds that do lots of trail riding accumulate miles much more quickly. Deep snow riding on stock sleds mean WOT produces a 30-40 mph track speed at best. On the trail, a few seconds of WOT means 60-80 mph, that is how you get 2500 miles on an 80 hour engine. That is why sleds in the flat lands last 4-5000 miles and my mountain sleds are hatched by 2500 miles.

I think the best bet on the Pro is to either have a warranty and a good dealer or put pistons in it every 100 hours or so. Worth it IMO, they ride sooooo nice!

There is a formula for equating engine hours to mileage to compare it to trail sleds. I can't recall what it is. My Doo had over 3000 miles on it when the motor needed to be done but the engine hours made it equivalent to double that for an average sled.

I have ridden in the mountains long enough to figure out for myself that you don't need to be to fancy in your math to figure out that mountain miles are hard on a sled.
