Not very good at seeing what the market is and is not going to do I am not a doom and gloom person as well but what are your thoughts figured there are more on here that track this stuff more than me here is some history.

on 3-2-09 the US-CAN rate was 1.277 now it is down to 1.182.

Do you think the US $$ will go down and the CAN $$ value going stronger through the summer or??

you just need to "hope" more.. thats what Mr. President says anyways...

I have been "hoping" a lot lately... just dont think Mr. President will like my wish if it comes true.... :D

The greatest net effect on the relationship with the Canadian dollar value is our government's policy of de-valuing our currency. A lower Canadian dollar means more exports of resources and materials. Now that the US stopped building houses, buying cars made in Canada etc., there is no further reason to make the Canadian public pay more for imported goods.

The dollars were at par last summer. I took advantage of it last summer and bought a boat in the US and imported it to Canada.
This spring break, I paid about $1000.00 in extra exchange.

Stand by.
The US dollar is about to get a lot weaker as inflation starts to kick in.
In August they will meet to decide what to about interest rates.
I expect them to raise them 1 to 2 points. They will claim this is a sign the economy is getting stronger when in fact it will herald the beginning of the inflationary period. You can't print money like a mad man with zero to back it up and expect the dollar to remain strong.
By this time next year I expet the Canadian dollar to be stronger than the US dollar.

agree 100% except I think it will be Christmas time. You can't print that much money without causing inflation. Not real difficult to understand.

Im sure that with china's refusal to buy more of the treasurys T Bills inflation will hit a lot sooner than they had planned for.
How does gold hold up against inflation?

Gold and silver are solid investments in inflationary times.

Why do you guys think Obama is sucking up to the middle east?
They are the only countries left that "might" buy up our debt.

Knee Deep.
Agreed. I was expecting the average consumer to start to really feel the effects of inflation around feb/march of next year. Obama and crew will do everything in their power to hold it off as long as possible. If it hets around christmas it would be a disaster for the Obama camp.

The US will invade Taliban held territory if it looks like Pakistan is about to fall.

In this day and age where we end people to space, spend billions on science and technology and we are going into a bloody holy war against some religious fundamentalist faction. Man, I don't know who the bigger retards are. I believe in God but I'm not killing for him.

When you have to deal with some parts of islam it's kill or be killed, I dont agree with it but thats how it is.

let the currency become equal. last summer we had a large amount of canadians purchasing goods in america. There are alot of canadians with money.

I would like to see the dollar at a much lower value than other countries including Canada.

That would force manufacturing back into the US. It would be cheaper to make good here again.

Ding Ding Ding. You got it right. I have 2 fairly wealthy friends who make a living playing markets and currency. They are loaded up on Canuck bucks right now. These 2 guys have made a pile of loot in the last 2 years on US and Canadian dollar fluctuations. I bought a lot more US products for my business as well when the Canuck buck was par. You guys are on the right track with this thread. BO is printing money like mad and you are all poorer for it and will be for awhile. He has no concept of fiscal management, I would not let him collect if he was delivering papers, much less running the largest economy on the planet. The other reason we are doing better up here is our fiscally conservative federal government. Hope all the middle of the road Americans who voted Dem last year are paying attention. Unfortunately for us we are tied very close to your economy or we would be doing even better. We are in economic contraction up here as well, but seem to be at the bottom of the valley and things are picking up a small amount.

ollie

american manufacturing will come back when one thing happens. And that has nothing to do with a stong or weak dollar.

For the last 6-7 years the american consumer has traded selection for price. Once the american consumer is sick of everyone having the same color this or that and don't mind paying more for there personal this or that. The american manufacturing will come back. Right now i import alot of sofas becasue all i need them in is one color. once the american consumer wants more colors and is willing to pay for that choice, is when we will see manufacturing come back. Right now i am forcasting 4-6 months out, becasue that is how long it takes me to get my goods from the time i order, until i recieve them. Special choices and colors or options went out the door, when the american consumer demanded the cheapest price possible.
And we retailers gave you folks what you asked for.

Thanks guys!!! I spend allot of money in Canada on some select products so I think I will see what I can swing and maybe do some buying I just hope it does not bite me in A$$.

I disagree.
Right now the price of a foreign made sofa is cheaper than a US made one.
When the cost of a sofa made out of country goes up 30%, while the cost of a US made sofa stays the same because of inflation, you will see US made sofa's being sold a LOT more than imports.

Same goes for everything else.
It will cost a lot more to import foreign made goods, that is when the manufacturing will come back.
