Unfamiliar Riding Partners

We usually take out 3 or 4 new guys every year but more often then not they never want to go riding again. New guys have a hard time with scratching and breaking plastic, we only have tight trees so there is no avoiding it. They want to do some off-trail riding after watching videos of guys out west climbing open hills in deep powder and thinks it's going to be easy and fun.
Don't need to worry about avalanches in Quebec since they are pretty rare and don't quite happen in our area.

Got to tell a story...
Around this time of year last year the talk of a SnoWest-ride was started, and it sounded very fun to me. The date suited me fine cuz it was when it was at its calmest at work.Started to think about it, and all the bits in the puzzle just fell together for me. Lots of people here on SnoWest helped me plan it, and told me how to do different things.
Travelled the 13000+ miles from Norway to Bozeman and there Catwoman had called a store to help me with gear, she also helped me with avy-gear that I ordered online and got sent to my hotel. KSH picked me up at the hotel and I drove with him up to West Yellowstone.
During my days in West Yellowstone I also met Phantomcat, Christopher, slash925, Coolcatm7 and SwPub.(Met more poeple, only listing SW-members) Had a great time there!
Travelled up north with the help of Catwoman and Phantomcat, had a GREAT time with them, and they helped me across the border. North of the border I met up with Yammy1320 and Hypnotoad, They showed me Golden and Revelstoke. Had a GREAT time there too!
NO WAY I could have had this great trip without the help of all these people taking a complete unknown norwegian along.
Felt that all you guys (and girl) whent out of your way to make my trip good, and had a really good time.
Most of those mentioned and a good deal more people i had talked to here on the forum, but my first real life conversation I think was with Catwoman when I was arrived Bozeman.

The fact that all these people was willing to take someone new with them on a trip was the thing that made my trip. And I wouldn't have been without it!!!

Again, THANKS to all you guys (and girl)!!

Rune:

Thats what its all about, isn't it.
Helping turn a stranger into a new buddy!

11 years ago I met a fellow scuba diver who is a farmer in South Africa.
Over the course of the year we became good buds on the internet.

Then, he had the opportunity to come to America and spend a week with my wife and I on vacation.

He had NEVER seen snow in his life before!

We rented a cabin in Grand Lake Colorado and took him snowmobiling every day. He had a total blast, and we have been friends ever since.

Example 1
I am going riding (DATE & TIME) in the Big Hole Mountains East of Rexburg.
My sled 2011 PRO-RMK 163
Boondocking and some hillclimbing. Nothing extreme.
Beginners and new riders are welcome.
need ride / Split fuel costs
Require beacon, probe and shovel (I don't ride without em..PERIOD)
(I will admit I need to update my avy course skills.been a few.class next year).

Here is a thought.

What if we build up a "template" that outlines all the relevant details.
Post that into post #1 of the thread and make it so that anyone else can just copy the template, paste it into their post and fill in the blanks??

I would never invite an unknown on a trip, maybe for a day locally. Usually on this forum you can get an idea pretty quick of someones ability just by there wording and questions.

I live close enough to good riding that a day trip is usually what I would be looking for.
A day trip or two and you can tell if you will enjoy riding with someone and if your personalities mesh.

I can get along with about anyone but there are some riders from ND that will definitley NOT be riding with me again.

WyoBoy wouldnt blame you for not inviting someone along on a TRIP without having first gone on a day ride first.

I don't have a problem taking people out riding. I know before I go, they may not ride like me, so no need to get upset. I always check on safety gear, if they do not have it, that means we don't get far off the groomed trail and no where near any hills. I then advise them how important that gear is. I love seeing the joy on there faces when they have gone to a new area and really had a great time. I have done what I love to do, be out riding and the people whom I was riding with had a ton of fun!!

I am glad there are those willing to take someone out new to their area. I would be more than willing to take someone out to show them my area. The big problem I run into is I work weekends when everyone else wants to ride. I have been wanting to take a trip further west and was even given money as a Christmas gift to go to the Bighorns or the Snowies. The guys I sometimes ride with on weekdays ride trails and have difficulty negotiating off trail in the Black Hills. After riding trails for a living I do not want to ride trails for fun. The other riders can only go weekends which I am not available until early April which by then they have already put there sleds away for the year.

i'm a very aggresive rider and a bit of a prick;) so i burn through riding partners a few a season:) its harder than you think finding guys who are good enough riders and in good enough shape to ride the trees all day! everyone says they're a mountain rider until they've spent a few hours away from any road! have found there really are few riders, at least in my area, that are able to make it the whole day and want to come back for more. spent 20 years doing the family thing so now it a guy ride everytime. i have to start begging for riding partners about half way through the season so am riding all the time with new partners. most of the time you can tell what kind of a rider a person is just by the gear they wear. the guys with the clean and spotless gear/sleds aren't usually into banging brush all day:) now find a guy with a less than spotless coat, shovel in his backpack, maybe a rip or 2 in his bibs and a few beauty marks on his sled, he's the kind of guy i'm looking to ride with...

YOU'VE GOT TO WANT IT!!!

Do you really need a standardized form to figure out how to hook up with other riders?

Not a matter of need.
The goal here is to figure out how to make it EASIER and more COMMON to get the vast number of Lurkers here on SnoWest together on the mountain.

my grammas #1 rule.only ride with skidoo riders because the other brands spend all day stuck.

Note to self. Never ride with snowmobiler because he is going to just whine about being stuck. Where's m8sandman? rather ride with him.

I hear ya sandman,

I have had a hard time finding riders too, but the ones that quite riding are usually ones that arent going to push you anyway, the ones that push you are guys that hate to loose and will come back time and time again no matter how big of prick you are because of the challenge.
There is one guy around here that actually pushes me. Most think we are both cocky, pricks or whatever, but when we ride the trees, in the steep and deep and run out of gas(even the extra) loading the sled up, those are the best rides, I get pi$sed when I come back with gas left over. Most of the other guys can and do go most of the places they just don't take the relentless lines one after the other. I'm hoping I have found some new riders to fill in the gaps.

A lot of the time we ride with someone that has to take a lesser route so new people aren't going to change much and the few that couldn't hang usually team up with a more relaxed group. The other thing is if someone wants to ride it makes a big difference if there is 2 of them and if they know the area. Then if they can't hang or get tired they can keep riding and go on there way.
