so I was out in shop working on my 08m8 last night as I just put the Slp kit in my sled..so I got to thinking about the insulation under the hood!!

do any of you take it out??must help with cooling?was thinking it might help with weight also..

removed all insulation & air ducting when i added timberland air.(wraped elec. wires with reflective silver tape)less weight & more venting options.

yep I run 2cool side vents and the gauge thing so a little heat tape and off comes the insulation then!!!

Thanks

Weight loss is not noticeable, but it gives you more clearance on the pipe and keeps things cooler.

I pulled all the insulation off the hood and then used some adhesive backed heat barrier from thermotec on the hood to help prevent the SLP pipe from melting the hood. It turned out great!

Jeff,
Nice job on the heat tape application. That is one of the neatest jobs I have seen. I will have to try that. It looks and Im sure works better than the foil tape most people use.

Thanks! I found that stuff at a local hot rod performance shop. It was about $20 for the 12"x24" sheet. I think I ended up using 2 sheets between the hood and a couple other places on the sled. The sheet is a fully woven kevlar type material with a foil face. It is super easy to apply and trim. The only thing to be aware of is that once it is stuck to something it is NOT coming off.

rip her out

I have side vents, gauge cage, and have added some more nose vents as of lastnight. I ripped the insulation stuff out the first day, and have had no problems at all. I just driilled 6 new nose vent holes and covered them with frogskinz lastnight. Its ten bucks for three, and easily fixed if they tear. I'm looking to vent the hood above the side panels with something. I think the 2 cool side vents will fit on there for sure.

I left the insulation there when I did my slp exhaust and a bdx intake. I would highly recomend removing it. Most of the time it's ok, but when the pipe gets good and heat soaked, melt city! bleah  I will be pulling it all out for this year.

By removing it you dont drop much weight if any once you add all of the foil tape to the hood, but it sure does keep things cooler by removing the stock insulation.

I was thinking the weight of the hood when it was open!!I broke one the cables that hold it open last season...but I took it all out tonight and it does not make any difference...the clearance is not much either from the pipe to air box??:confused:

Yes the weight of the hood when you open it and still have all of the stock intake stuff on there, and have the insulation is pretty heavy. Im not sure how close the pipe comes to the stock intake box because I got rid of that suitcase as well...

yeah

I used Design Engineering, inc cool-tape. Its suppose to reflect up to 1500 degrees of radiant heat. Never melted anything with this stuff.

what about the 2010 all the insulation is glued on any ideas should i just rip it off and clean up whats left with thinner or something

I took mine off, and as a discretion the hood may be black underneath as opposed to the white overspray. At first I tried the slow peel method with a razor blade (similar to skinning an animal.) Then I grabbed some WD-40. It weakens the glues bond. As I was very slowly pulling the foam off, I sprayed the WD-40 where it was peeling. This worked the best and left minimal scrap foam to scrape off. Takes a very long time. Good luck!!
