Turnagain Pass

We had a trip in the pass today and our guides said that it was pretty much a whiteout all day. Not much down at Placer/Portage, but in the pass it was dumping. We will be back up in the morning scouting around. Here is what NOAA is saying:

Who ever rides Turny tomorrow get some pics! I am thinking about heading there on sunday. Just short tracks, should be great fro them if I can get some visibility.

One of our guides had a trip this morning and said that there was about 1 foot of new in the parking lot and about 6in down at Placer, but the snow had lighten up by mid afternoon.

From the avy report.

Well we didn’t get as much snow as we thought or hoped for. 1 to 2 inches fell yesterday before skies cleared for the night. Total snow accumulation was 6-8 inches of very light snow.

In the last 24 hours:
Center Ridge weather station at 1800 feet in Turnagain Pass has recorded 1 inch of new snow and 1 inch of snow settlement. Total snowpack depth is 67 inches, no change from yesterday. The temp at 7am was 24 degrees F.

Winds have increased over the last 3 hours. The front edge of another weather wave is moving north out of the Cook Inlet and through Seward. I don’t think we will see much precip from it today but the next wave this evening and tomorrow will give us another shot at additional snow.

Its worth it if you can see well enough to get up on top. In a couple of those little pockets on the top today there was powder up past the nose on my rev. Avy danger is bad

Was it bad visibility again today? Windy? I am wanting to go tomorrow, is it worth heading from the valley to jump short tracks up there tomorrow?

we went on saturday. It was really fun, but my friend tore his mcl. But the snow was awesome. 1 foot in the lot and going up it turned into 2-3 feet and even deeper in some spots. visibility sucked bad so we couldnt go to the top but there were some 10-15 minute pockets of blue skies. It was very worth it though.

Rode Turny for the 1st time today. The light was poor, but gracious at times. The snow was nice on the backside. I had snow comming up over the hood so Im not pissed at all. I wished we would have had someone who had been there before cause me and my buddy just kinda laid back and watched where people were going.

I know I will be going back!

It was starting to snow whenever we left so Turny could get some more!!! I know Im gonna sleep great tonight. I was so tired from climbing all day that I could hardly stay on my sled on the ride back.

all in all, for the 1st time over the top Im happy. I almost yard saled the sled though. On the way up to the launch over the top I got squirly bailed off and the sled pulled a perfect u turn and went about 300yards south. It was screaming too lol lol I just sat and watched figuring I would be having to pick up pieces and call it a day. But Nope. It didnt hit a thing and there was a guy at the bottom who jumped on it and stopped it. I was pretty lucky, Im still amazed it didnt hit anything or just launch from one of the dips.

I seen alot of people today to, so if you recognize the pics/sled just say something

Just think, if you had a 800 man sled, you would have made it the first time (like I have any room to talk)!! Great pics. Bring in the video Wednesday. We all missed you at work today. You could have played sim with us. Merry Christmas to you and your family . How about them Cowboys?

I dont think the climb was that bad over the top, but me not knowing where to go and the light suking sure as hell didnt help.

either way I LOVE IT, I cant wait to go back!!!!

I would like to say thanks to the a--hole who messed with the snow stake. Some of us like to know how much it snowed so thanks again for messing it up. just look on the camera.

In laws just drove through turny and said it was complete white out. They said the parking lot had 10 in. when they stopped to use the bathroom. Portage turnoff has about 4in. This storm is huge and should drop around 20 in.

That is correct. I TRIED riding Turny today with not to good of results. We blew in with the storm. Got to the parking lot at 10:30 and it was bad visibility but I could see a little ways. By the time I unloaded it got much worse. Noone was able to make it to the first climb. We tried but were unsucessfull. Gonna be great up there when this storm passes though. They have a great base with about 1 ft of frest ontop around the parking lot.

Man I can't wait!!!!!!!!

I come home from the slope on friday and have never gone over the top at Turny. I am Soooooo stoked to ride with all of this fresh powder!! Anyone gonna be up there Sat or Sun the 29-30th? I'll be on a 06 King Cat might have some others with me, don't know for sure. But I definately will be there! Say hey if ya see me or drop me a line before. Looking forward to a killer ride. Hope to see some of ya there.. Ride hard, ride SAFE! :beer;
