Turbo Q'S

i just bought an '04 polaris rmk 800, which will only be used out west in wyoming and I'm interested in putting a turbo/power adder on it, is it possible to put a turbo on that old of a sled? or what are my options? any input will help, thanks!

Yes and no, yes there were kits made for the carbed sleds, and yes they run very well IF the tuning and jetting are SPOT ON, but thats the problem, change 500 feet in elevation and get ready to change jets/needles ect...

Look at it this way, you have a sled worth maybe 3000.00 if that, now your going to put 4000.00 worth of turbo stuff on it and change it into a very hard to tune beast that runs on race gas only. Now unless you have changed pistons to lower compression, installed a custom crankshop/indy dan crank and lower end assembly you will blow the bottom end to bits. and of course if you do the motor plan on another 3 grand or more.
So you end up with 10 grand plus in a sled that may or may not run well and is a pain to tune that is still worth 3 grand if that.

if you love the sled and do not want to buy a new pro, I would go the 1200cc watercraft motor route, they flat work GOOD .. Not bashing in any way but just trying to save ya a ton of money and heartache....best of luck

thank you very much! thats all i wanted was a good honest opinion from someone that knows about turbos etc.. the next question is where do u get that motor and est. cost? thanks!!!

I have a turbo doc kit for my 02 700. I haven't had a chance too run it this year yet. Everything I have heard about these kits is they flat out work well. Member dpacker has one on his 04 800 and has had zero issues.

As for the bottom end, yes this is a place to be cautious. You need too check the crank run out and make sure its within spec.

You can find the used edge kits floating around if you look. Or even look up the turbo doc (Steve Packer), he may have one for sale.

I personally didn't want to go with the water crafts engine or a big bore. I like the fact that you can use stock internals with a turbo.

both of you were good help. i appreciate that, but could i get a website to the turbo doc and also watercraft? id like to compare and ask around with my buddies what they'd prefer, thank you

Also if you went with lower boost, lets say 3-5 lb it would be much easier to jet and bottom end may live.

I guess real question is how much "real" power do you want and at what altitude? As well as are you willing to run race fuel at 12 bucks a gallon? or a mixture? Shane hart at HM turbos in lolo mt has run the turbo edge as well, good guy to talk with. Have ya ever ridden a legit 200 hp light weight sled? Its a handful in a edge chassis, my edge runs dead even with my friends 800 dragon turbo at 8 pounds boost, and hes got carbon parts as well. just as a good reference for you.

Theres a lot to be said for a good solid high compression 800 with porting, twins,42 mm carbs ect..pretty much pull and go.

Oh as you said you just got the sled...read my post on the water pump belts !!! always carry a spare and tools to change it.

2XM3, has a good point about race gas. Only way around that is running a low compression head. You can have a factory head modified for about $ 200.

Shane Heart is an awesome guy to work with and is very knowledgeable. I bought my used turbo doc set up from him. Very helpful guy!

thanks for the sites :face-icon-small-hap 2XM3- I'm not looking to spend 12 bucks a gallon at all!! ok heres what I'm looking for, I'm looking to gain a little more HP so i can shred a little better, nothing big or fancy OR thats going to cost me an arm and a leg. reliability is my main thing, staying away from race gas mixing etc. i live in iowa but this sled will stay in laramie wyoming for the winter. sorry i didn't make this clear at first :face-icon-small-dis thanks

SLP has a lot of good stuff for the 800 big block motors, I have a set of there twin pipes for sale in the pipes section...that and porting/jetting and there airbox, and head gives ya like 26 hp, go 18/42 gear, correct mtx weights and it will run very well....imho

Honestly if your not looking for a ton of HP, I would get a good set of twin pipes. Look into some porting(im a fan of fastrax work), and a high compression head. Get it clutched and geared right. That sled should go pretty good with that.

Oh I almost forgot, make sure you get your primary balanced! Those engines are notorious for having very unbalanced clutches!

Lol, looks like we are on the same page and typing at the same time!

yeah....lol....i'll sell the twins cheap as well...i run the race pipes so they have just been sitting

change 500 feet in elevation and get ready to change jets/needles ect...

I ride my carbed turbo from 4000' to 10,000' w/o changing jets. Install power jets for fuel adjustment and play w/ the amount of boost. Very easy. Takes a couple of seconds. I adjust my sled very little. I assume a Polaris would be the same.

Should be, i've always run tmx bored flat slides or lectrons, I think a varitible WG would be the ticket, as if boost stayed constant vs Alt jetting would be pretty durn close...

pm sent on the pipes with lowball price...lol

He better turbo a big bore then:face-icon-small-win.

I see you're 19, is this your first sled? Twins on this sled will probably be just dandy for what you want. The SLP airbox kit & flowrites are good for deep snow. Get it clutched and jetted correctly and it will put a smile on your face.
