Turbo not using oil??

My 09 TM8 doesn't appear to be using much oil if any at all. I've been on 3 rides in very little snow just putting around. Will the turbo use much oil if you're not running it very hard?

I was referring to the oil in the turbo. When I was riding it at the end of last winter in deep snow I was adding oil every couple rides.

your turbo may use a little oil but if it doesnt I wouldnt be alarmed as long as your oil pump is circulating the oil for the turbo the oil system is a closed loop. Check to see if your turbo oil lines and tank are warm when you are riding.

What brand kit are you running? Do you have a blow off valve . I went a whole season without adding any oil .:confused:

its best you sell your kit ASAP....how are you going to t-shoot an issue when you cant bring yourself to ask a question correctly, call it as i see it:beer;

- why ask this question, or did you just detox and have a thought?
- what kit?
- does your dogs breath smell like dog food?

fun fact: these turbos will do fine with only 1 drop of oil at idle every 4-6 secs.....disconnect the supply line to the turbo and start the sled, first remove the intake filter and hold the compressor wheel with your hand, watch the oil come out the hose and count:beer;

Relax Hatch, everybody's learning curve is different. The best way to learn about something is to jump in with both feet and just do it right? Maybe ask a few questions along the way to shorten the learning curve, right. Not everybody is an engineer.

It is a Boondockeer kit. I really don't know anything about it so maybe you could explain it to me since apparently you know everything.;):beer; I don't ask questions just so that I have something to post on here. Thanks everyone for the info!!

If your turbo does use oil, you need to get it rebuilt or replaced, quick! It's best to use a lightweight synthetic oil so it flows even on a below zero morning. I'm not sure whats avalible for replacement parts for yours and like most parts now days, they don't make replacement parts for them. They want you to trade them in for a rebuilt one. I used to rebuild turbos and blowers for trucks, but most of the manufactures do not make the repair kits anymore.

this is not good, is your charge tube lined with oil?

take the charge tube off and clean the inside with carb cleaner, then run the sled for a good ride, remove and inspect, its safe to say your seal is trash if your charge tube has oil in it again...i would get it fixed soon

another question, do you have the sled upside down alot while running?

I can't remember why right now, but oil from the turbo can cause detonation.
as earlier mentioned. get it taken care of.

I haven't had the sled upside down at all yet. I haven't ever looked at the inside of the charge tube . I'll look at it in the morning and let you know what I find. My dealer told me it would go through a pint of oil per ride.Maybe he doesn't know much about turbos either!! THANKS!!!

I Had my first ride yesterday on my 06 TM7... With the Garrett 2871... I'm going to have to start a couple posts because I had a few issues, one of which was the turbo using oil... Its on race gas and I was running about 10-12 pounds... And its used...

I did have it upside down on 2 occations... didn't really want to shut it down right after a hard pull... Then had to pretty much roll it over to get er turned around... Wouldn't start after but that's another story... I did notice one time after a hard pull where I started to trench in... Jumped off to try to get it to pop out... When I let go of the throttle it burned some turbo oil... Could see it aswell as smell it...

I wonder if burns oil more when it's slowing down quickly, it would make sense that that would put more pressure on the bearings... It was also misting some oil out of the BOV... When I looked in the charge tube I was expecting it to be more oily but there was just a bit darkened in the charge tube hose joints... I guess the seals are prob worn or wearing out in this turbo?? It sounds really good and spins very freely... Especially when it is all lubed and warmed up I could hear it freewheeling for a while after shutting it down... I wonder if it would be a good move to run 2 stroke oil in the turbo... Atleast then if you are burning some it's all good... You would think the 2 stroke oil would handle heat well and be good as far as not leaving much for deposits as 2 sroke oils are very low in ash.. I think all turbo's will use a bit of oil, especially with all the differant angles and bouncing around a sled does... I am going to start a post on the 2 stroke oil in the turbo... Just want to search first so hatchers doesn't give me sht:D

Don't worry about Hatchers:) The 2-stroke oil is a good idea . . In fact the boondocker kits call for synthetic 2 stroke oil in their turbo

Here is some food for thought . . . These turbos were not manufactured specifically for snowmobiles, they are the same basic design as tubos found in high performance cars only smaller. Do you think it would be normal for a turbo mounted in your car to be leaking oil? If they did there would be a blue haze following every rice rocket out there.

DO NOT RUN 2 STROKE OIL IN YOUR TURBO!!!! Bad idea. It wont hurt anything, but it will cause issues.

Interesting...... I have ran nothing but 2 stroke oil for 3 years in my garret turbo.. I have not had one single problem with the turbo.. Only problem so far is that I blew a carb boot apart with to much boost.
Please post some facts on what issues running 2 stroke oil will cause..
