Turbo Filters - Plugging

Went riding last weekend in Revy, it was awsome, lots of powder! Too much!, my filter plugged up with ice and I noticed it by the Air / Fuel ratio going real low. Dropped a lot of power too. I got the snorkel on there and I dried it out over night. Still plugged again in the powder the next day. I have the fine screen over it too. It plugged up enough to create enough vacumn under boost to draw a bit of oil past the seal into the charge tube. Since everyone else most likely has the same setup, what have you done to mitigate this issue? I could carry an extra filter for deep powder days but that seems ridiculous..

Just curious, would soaking the filter in oil help in anyway?
Or will the moisture just attract more moisture and create more of an issue?
Are you using a 'filter' type intake, wrapped with a 'snow-filter'??
I don't know what kit your running, but I have had few to no issues on my Impulse.
Now and then (in the DEEP) snow can pile up on top of the filter, but at least its easy enough to clear off, being between your legs n all..

Multiple intake locations would be ideal on those DEEP daze eh.

yup it's a cone filter with the snow screen. Not sure If oil would help, i take a guess at no though. Seems like I need to find a way to keep powder off it in deep pow days. Not even sure if that's possible. I thought a longer filter might helo reduce the velocity across it as the area would be bigger so it would suck in less pow. and take longer to plug up..

this has been an ongoing ordeal with the boondocker kit especialy. Rear mount mcx doesnt seem to have as much trouble. On my boondocker I am of the opinion that is has to do with steam off the turbo being pulled into the intake. we have tried carrying several filters, coating them etc. minor improvements. the only decent answer so far is to extend the intake to get it further from the steam and snow. julio

Buy a CR cannister and 90 it up behind you, you have a rear mount I presume? I had a K&N, always frosted off, Alpine sells one too.

I am running the CR cannister with the 90 bend. I extended out and used the exhaust cap from the stock exhaust cover to hold it in place so it wasn't flopping around. Used a dremel to make the hole bigger and it fits perfect over the tube. It is a very clean looking set up and it helps stop any heat coming out from that side of the turbo. I haven't had many problems with snow (everytime you stop dust it off) and it still clears my gas can when I am packing it.

I have the side mount Boondocker 2871 turbo on my Apex. I have had some issues with getting snow on the outside of the prefilter but last year at the Fairview shoot out we rode in deep powder Friday and Saturday we went for another ride.

My sled was not getting RPM and just running horrible. It was the first time I ever experience the metal filter actually ice up to the point air was having a hard time even getting through. I had to completely remove the cone and knock all the ice out of it.

This year I am trying an idea I have of making 1/2" holes in the metal cone in hopes that they will not ice up.

I know that feathering the throttle can help cause the prefilter to puff up and relax and knock the snow off some but it is a problem that I have not fully solved.

I used a larger filter it gives more area so it takes longer to plug and I agree heat and steam are a major problem.

I did something different
I bought a big humidifier filter and wrapped the entire can and made a large pre filter from Flo Rite (SLP) material
The outer circumference is 18 inches so huge increase
Ice does not build up and when snow get's on it I just smack it around to clear it
Has'nt plugged since I made it

Here is the picture you where after.

Open can with holes and a prefilter. I am sure some snow get through but with the heat down the charge tube we assume it vapourizes. I carry and extra sock in case I tear this one.

screen

the other thing you guys should consider is putting a piece of screen over the intake of the turbo at the base of the intake tube. It will save you the sick feeling you get when you hear what sounds like change in a blender as a chunk of ice drops into your turbo.
speaking from experience the intake wheel is not hard to change but can ruin a weekend. julio

Never thought about that. What did you use for screen and what did you use to keep it there?

sounds like a good idea. I have had to stop and take filter off to get ride of that ice build up inside scared me a little.

Almost forgot, Apparently if you paint the metal cage (if yours is not already painted) the bit of ice on the prefilter won't stickto the cage.

Remove snorkel

I have had this problem forever with my BD setup and I am going to try and put the intake screen right on the turbo and get rid of the snorkel all together. In deep snow the snorkel gets covered in snow and then the sled will stall right out. I will put a screen kit over the hole in the side panel and suck from under the hood. Have a look at the intake screen that Custom Turbo Werx has for the doo kit. Hotter intake air potentially going to be any concern???

Hot steamy air is not going to be much better. I have never rode a BD set up but have always thought that air intake looked like trouble for multiple reasons. I know alot of the 2 smoker turbos suck air from inside but that cant be ideal. GL I am sure someone may have figured it out.

Drilled small hole in the lowest portion off the intercooler, to let water drain out. NO this small hole doesnt effect the boost level.
