turbo choice

ok so about a week back i posted about putting a 16t turbo onto and rx1 over a 2554 well as i just found out the turbo i have isnt a 2554 i was screwed by a member on a different forum

the turbo i got is still a garrett

part number is 14411-36f11
on the compressor housing is say .48 AR

wondering what i should do

1.use this turbo

2.16t

3.mistubishi evo 3

i want 10-12 psi at sea level i have a powderlites headshim stock pistons
which is the best one for me

I believe thats an old T25 which is a journal bearing turbo vs the GT2554 which is a ball bearing turbo. The GT2554 is the superior unit for a number of reasons. IMO the A/R on the T25 is too small for our applications, it will spool like crazy but it'll also create way too much heat. A t25 and a 16T are about the same A/R depending on whether the 16T is a 6 or 7. If I recall the 7 cm housing is .49 or so but don't quote me on that. MCX uses the 16T on the lower hp/boost kits they sell but they can get away with the smalller A/R due to the fact that they are rear mounts and the exhaust temps get a chance to drop so there isnt the heat you will see on a midmount. I'm not familiar with the Evo iii it may be a good choice couldn't tell you for sure. Is the Evo a TD05 based turbo?

I think thats a old turbo off a old Nissan 200sx. If you are running lower boost I don't know if it would be worth getting a new turbo. But if you were running higher boost levels it would be worth the upgrade to a evoIII or 16t would be a good upgrade. Plus the turbo you have is t25 flanged where the 16t is t3 flanged and the evo has a mitsu turbine flange so you would have to change your header and final exhaust.

the good thing is i havent started building my header so thats why i want to do this right now will the 16t be good around the 10-12psi mark is that the same turbo mcx runs in their 260 apex kit

16t is perfect for 12 psi,but why so low boost?

MCX I think uses the 16T Mitsu partially due to their cost and ease of access in Sweden (read Volvo here). The 16T is a good turbo but it is still a journal bearing turbo the same as the one you already have. I don't think you'll see any real improvement in spool etc till you change to a ball bearing turbo. The 16T refers to the compressor wheel size and shape but doesn't address the turbine side. The turbos MCX uses are all TD04 based turbines. Because you are making a midmount you really need to pay attention to the A/R of the hot side and even the Mitsu 7cm TD04 housing is only a .49 fine for maintaining the spool up on a rear mount but its going to run hot on a midmount. The compressor is the easy side to get right. Again JMO.

Well I'm really stuck on what to do what about plumbing in a 38mm turbosmart external gate or should I say screw it and try to find a different turbo because I have already bought this supposed to be 2554 and I got scammed but this 16t is close and I could have it quick and atleast get a start on it Or what should I do

Look for a ball bearing Garrett GT series. The Mitsu flanges are quite a bit harder to come by where you can buy the T25 and T3 flanges all day long at any speed shop or on Ebay. Way easier for the DIY guy.

1. Decide on your boost level Be honest with yourself

10-12 lbs 2554 will do it
> 12 < 15 lbs buy a 2860 with a 0.64 A/r housing
> 15 lbs buy a 2871 consider the 0.86 A/R housing

Do it right the first time, you don't want to be building multiple headers. If you build your header and down pipe for a 2554 a 2860 will bolt right in in its place in the future if you choose as they are frame interchangable.

16t or gt25

I have a 04 rx1 with a old mcx front mount system on it. I put a 16t on it 2 years ago and it works great. It spools up fast and has good response. I ride with a couple of gt25 apes and the R1 pulls way harder with the 16t. I built a mid mount header this year and i think it will work well up to 14lbs. I ran 12lbs last year and the gt2860 sleds didn't have to wait long for me.

i was told that the mcx kit i bought had a t16 in it.i got the 310 chip put in and at 8000 it holds 17 and at 2200 it will easily hit 20 if i don't watch it.is this the proper amount of boost for a apex with a t16 rear mount or is this a biger turbo?
