trying to header wrap my pipe

i have a 09 m8pgt, i bought a speedwrx turbo pipe and was told that it needed to be wrapped so i bought some good header wrap and i am trying to wrap it myself. looks good untill i get to the last half of the pipe with the long tappered part of the expantion chamber. wraps just keep wanting to side down and bunch no matter how tight. so im looking for ant advice from someone with some experiance. any tips or tricks out there?

I have done a little bit of wrapping on 4 stroke pipes, but one of em had a collector on it, so a decent length taper, similar situation, working your way up the tapper from small to large worked 10x better then large down. then it just bunches up and fails. also, use the spray on stuff for the wrap or I find it just kinda of flakes apart. the spray helps keep it all together.also, soakign the wrap in water first makes it a little more pliable and seems to apply better. good luck.

header wrap

the trick is lots of water and use band clamps to help hold if you dont have a buddy to help it come ot great if you soak it good lck

Yep, soak the wrap in water (use 1" wrap, not the 2"), let it dry and spray it with that wrap coating when done. Clamp it only where there is no taper, usually just the ends is enough. It took me a few tries the first time, there is definatly a technique to making it look good.

i get same look using 2 in wrap just se alot of water and put tight when done get some stove black spray paint and paint pipe so yo dont make a mess nder hood with rap

is there a noticeable performance advantage with wrapping the pipe as opposed to using the stock heat shield?

i dont know about performance but i dont melt anything under hood any more so that is a big plus

Header wrap vs Stock heat shield.

There are a few.
The pipe will hold more heat.
The stock wrap falls apart on The turbos and you get this white dust every were.
You can touch the pipe with out burning your 50-75 pair of gloves.
It seams to give you more of a consistent pipe and temp.

There is a guy in Pocatello, ID that makes turbo blankets for diesel pickups. I have seen a couple of pipe blankets he has made for sleds. They look good. I think the name of his business is Turbo Performance.

I just got done header wrapping a boondocker turbo pipe. I used 1" copper header wrap. The process was much easier than I had invisioned and I think it turned out great for a first attempt. It took a LOT more wrap than I expected. I ended up using 2 and a half 50' rolls to get the job done. I still need to spray it with the sealing paint. I used stainless steel safety wire to secure the wrap at the ends, and also wrapped it against the grain the full length to help make sure it stays put. Thanks MMSports for the pics. They helped a lot in figuring it out.

sounds about right for wrap.. i used to run 50' rolls of 2" on my sidemount header 4 stroker.. and if you go to thin it just fails..

looks like you did a great job. the stuff works awesome if installed proper. if not, it just flakes apart and imagine shredding all of that and throwing it all over your motor!

Its called "Thermo-Tec" Copper Header Wrap. I bet I actually used more than 1/2 of the third roll. I was surprised as well. I figured 50' would be more than enough, but I was WAY off. Here is a link to where I got mine, but it seems to be available from a number of places. Pegasus just happens to be about 1/2 mile from where I work and they have it in stock.

To connect the rolls, I just overlapped them about 4 inches, and used a stapler to staple them together. I just made sure the "overlap" was on the underside of the pipe.

Most wrap manufactures say one 50' roll of 1" will do a snowmobile pipe. I am not sure what kind of sled pipe they are wrapping but my M-pipe took about 98'. Pre-soak the wrap in water and use zip-ties as you go. Then change them out with the stainless bands when the job is done. DEI makes a high temp silicone spray coating that cures with a heat gun and set's everything up great when the job is done.
