trouble removing the clutch Helix

Does anyone have a secret for getting the Torx screws that hold the clutch helix on loose? I tried tapping them as instructed by the polaris manual and that didn't help. All I managed to do was bend my torx bit, gotta buy a new one tomorrow since apparently I only have one t27.

Blast the heads for couple seconds w/mapp torch, little longer with propane. I got a few of those twisteds' laying around!

Don't have any kind of torch here to use, I would have to buy one:face-icon-small-dis

Think I am going to try my impact driver on them.

use a small punch that fits down in side the torx , instead of tapping on the head that way you dont mash the torx pattern, i use my 18v ridgid impact driver to remove mine!

helix

Zman use a hand held impact driver the kind you tap with a hammer twist it and tap at the same time you can also use your torx and rachet if you dont care about taping on the ratchet you might need some one to help

I tried that first. I got all but three out and they are stubborn ones. I just ran over to harbor freight and picked up a little 18 volt quarter inch impact driver. They had it on sale for super cheep and I have been wanting one, so I'll see if that will pull them. I think I am going to have to buy three new screw by the time i get them out.

and 1 new impact lol jk

one left, I am about to take a cut off wheel and just cut it out. I don't care about saving the helix.

Where can I get replacement Torx screws to hold the helix on?

The hammer punch has always worked wonders for me, but you have to start with that and not rounded fittings.

If the hammer punch driver and an impact driver strips them out, then I'd use a dremel cut off wheel to cut a flat blade in the bolt and hammer punch it again. Those have never failed me.

Yup, started with that, and got all but 3 out. I'm down to one left and I have tried that, and cordless impact and heating it with a lighter. That baby is in there. It's not completely stripped yet but it definitely has to be replaced.

Have you tried cutting a flat blade in it? Another help would be to hit it with some WD and heat, the heat will help draw the lube into the threads more.

after you get those torx bolts out, i replaced mine with stainless steel allen head bolts (from Ace Hardware)...i have more allen head wrenches then damn torx bits...

Yes and yes, and now in the first round of team Helix vs. the dremel tool, the winner is, Still the team helix...lol

Ace hardware is two blocks down the street and they have a whole wall of stainless bolts.

I got my stubborn ones out with the hand held hammer impact driver without rounding out the torx head. Just put a little bit of any hand wash with sandy texture to prevent it from rounding and spoiling the head. The hand wash also works wonders for getting out almost rounded allen head bolts or any other rounded bolts/nuts. The sandy texture in the hand wash fills in the missing spots.

if you have access to a welder..easiest way to get them out when stripped...weld a 3/8 nut to the head of the bolt..then use a impact to remove after it cools for 30 seconds or so..the heat from welding expands the metal and helps loosen the bolt...
