Trip to Colorado

We are planning a trip to Colorado from Wisconsin from Jan 23-29 or thereabouts and are trying to nail down where we should ride. We will ride 4 or 5 days. Have been to Wyoming Snowies and Togwotee lots of times but want to try a new place.

We'd like to be flexible and follow the snow but that isn't that great of an option when you need hotels, etc. So my question is, where should we plan on riding??

My list is looking like this right now in order of "Must Ride"

1) Crested Butte. Hearing lots of good things on the internet, but not finding much reading on it. The are looks really small though?

2) Wolf Creek. the tree riding looks appealing to me there.

3) Rabbit Ears. Just because it gets the most press everywhere. And staying here we would have some options to ride Vail or Grand Lake if those locations are better?

Any input is appreciated!

What are ya looking for?

Both the Mesa and CB are great choices. Endless meadows of powder on the Mesa and great mountain riding in CB. There are 3 great areas to ride out of the 'Butte so dont worry about not having enough terrain. And a pretty fun town to party in. Long way to come, happy to show you around for a day if you make it out or to answer any questions.

for that haul...........Grand Mesa!

Alexander lake Lodge

Mesa Lakes Lodge

Grand Mesa Lodge

Electric Mountain Lodge..........

Plus just down the hill a few miles in Cedaredge there is lodging (and hot tubs) as well.

There was a guy named LakeEffect on snowest and his buddy that Ray and I showed around the Mesa a few years ago, was it you? I thought they were from Michigan though.

You guys should really look at the Steamboat Lake Outfitters (SLO) area...it's north of Steamboat Springs about 40 miles around Hahn's Peak. I think SLO is now called the Hahn's Peak Roadhouse so research that on the world wide web:)

I have a group that comes from MN every year and last year I took them to SLO...they said they are never riding anywhere else ever again. They loved it so much! VRBO has ride in/ride out homes for rent so living conditions are amazing:)

Just thought I would share this area with you!!

Thats the great thing about riding areas everybody has there "spot". Having rode over most of the west in decades of riding in my opinion there are two areas way above the rest. West Yellowstone in Idaho and and Grand Mesa in Colorado. In my opinion you would have had to ridden all 800 square miles of the Mesa to say you do not like it :face-icon-small-sho

Just my opinion though..............

We were there last April 1st. Hahn's Peak Roadhouse. Nice place, ride from your door. I think it was 21 to 23 miles north of Steamboat Springs. Awesome riding areas. If I remember correctly, Grand Mesa would be around a 4 hour drive more than Hahn's Peak for you. But I could be off on that.:face-icon-small-ton

There are so many options to where you can go from Laramie. If you are coming from that far. If the snow isn't great in the Larmie you can go to Walden CO which is probably an hour drive depending on road conditions. From there you can get access to Rabitt Ears or Buff Pass. If you go past Walden to Steamboat Springs you can get access to RE - Buff Pass and The Hahns Peak area. 4 place trailer from Steamboat won't have much luck at Buff Pass and you may make some locals mad.:face-icon-small-win Sled deck and a 2 place is fine. You could also check out Saratoga in Wy or the Sierra Madres. If your willing to drive a few hours further Togwotee is great. You can do a classic winter package there for around 100 bucks a day per guy which includes you're meals, room, happy hour and a guide each day. Ask for the guide named Lefty. Awesome guy and rides like a boss!!!

idea

Could do 2 days Wolf creek drive thru Lake city(do a half at the top of the pass before Lake city) then stay in Gunnison then drive to Crested butte for a day or 2

Vagabond ranch is a ride right from your cabin destination and is on the North west side of the Grand Lake trail system. All types of riding to say the least. Rabbit Ears/Buff Pass are only 45 minutes away from the parking area and are a must if your making the trip.
Crested Butte, Grand Mesa are also awesome.

Thank you everyone for the responses!

BOHICA-
That isn't me but believe it or not I rode with him at Togwotee the last 2 years (and he is coming to Tog with me this year as well). The snowmobile world is a small one sometimes - didn't know who he was until we were grouped together at Togwotee! He said I should reach out to you if we decide on Grand Mesa.

We've ridden the Snowies every year for the last 5 years and Togwotee for the last 2 (and I am going there in March). 2 place and sled deck with 4 guys should get us around I think well.

I think our perfect trip may be 2 days riding in Crested Butte and 2 days north in RE, Hahn's Peak, Buff Pass or somewhere up there depending on snow.

Anyone free to ride weekdays? :face-icon-small-coo

Next question is any snowmobile friendly motels in Crested Butte?

If headed to Crested Butte you need to check out staying just outside town in Almont.

Ya it's a little 20 minute drive to the hill every day, but this place is the BOMB as most of their cabins are really, really nice:)

Lots and lots of parking for your rig and whatnot...nicest place I've probably stayed while sledding in a really, really long time.

If I was riding that area for a couple days, I would save some money and stay in Gunnison and ride a day from Crested Butte(Kebler) and a day from Taylor Park Reservoir.

Let me know when you will be there, I will be there 3-4 times this year riding during the week. I could show you some way off the beaten path areas if you are brave enough follow a guy from Indiana. Been dirtbiking that area for 30 years and sledding for 20.
