Tree wells? your experience?

Treewells!!!!!!

My son was helping me pull the sled away from the tree and sunk. He never did get any footing under him and was yelling at me to give him a hand. I told him to hold on while I got a few pics. I don't understand why he was so short tempered with me. Kids these days!

That looks all too familar! We have tree wells that form anywhere from 10-20' deep around here. Worst part is, like your photos, they are often times hollow around a snow covered surface and the rug comes out from under you rather thn just riding into an open hole! One more than one occasion we have have to climb the tree to get back up to the snow level, and then try to jump out away from the tree to solid ground.

On a different note, These same tree wells can become your best freind in an emergency situation. They are an instant shelter with little or no effort. Also in the bottom of most tree wells, you will find small dead kindling to get a fire started as well. Something to keep in mind should you ever have to spend a night on the mountain.

Those are the most dangerous, I was stuck close to a tree jumped off and went up to my neck like your son.

Dangerous is right. I know I have grabbed a sled bumper or ski to try and keep my azz from sinking to the bottom. Im sure we all have. Fortunately we all go in feet first for the most part.

I never thought about using one as a shelter but that surely would make quick work to get shelter. <---good info!

One saved my sled from imminent doom once...got bucked off sidehilling and the sled started heading for a canyon, thank god it somehow found the only tree and well on that hill before plummeting into the abyss. :D

I at least found a branch to stand on, but all my dad did was give me a shovel and then stand there and take pictures....
