Trading sleds, one from US, one from Canada, what's the way to do it?

I have read this topic, http://www.snowestonline.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78116&highlight=selling+canada
And found a lot of very good info. But my situation is a bit different. A fellow Snowest member and myself would like to trade sleds, straight up. We would meet half way, which would put us in Canada. So what's the right way to import his sled into Canada if he is bringing it over himself? I know he could bring it over as if he was going sledding. Then we could do the deal here. But is that sled here legally then? Could I register it? Or would we go through the normal importing process, and bring it over in my name, with him as importer? Or could he bring it over under his name, saying he was going sledding, do the deal, then I do the paper work once it's here? What's the best way of doing this?

And also for him to bring my sled into the US on his way back home, what does he need? Has anybody ever imported a sled into the US? Most times it's into Canada. I want his boarder crossing to go smoothly on the way back. If anybody has any ideas the help would be greatly appreciated.

Read this for getting his sled to Canada:

http://www.riv.ca/ImportingAVehicle.aspx

And something like this for getting your sled into the states:

http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/trade/basic_trade/importing_car.xml

You can do the "I'm just going to ride" thing, but the sled is then up here illegally. Many have done it, but there is nothing legit about it.

Thanks. So to import his sled we would just follow the same steps a if I was going to go get it then? I want to do it the legal way so I can register and insure it. Has anybody here imported one into the US? That site is hard to follow. If someone has first hand experience it would help.

if you want to do it the legal way, your going to both have to be at the same border at the same time. either you can park your truck on the canadian side and walk down to the u.s. side and meet up with the other seller. you will have to explain at the u.s. side what you are doing so they dont' shoot you. meet him inside with paper work, have them notorize the title, jump in the truck with him and proceed to the Canadian side. import your sled as noted in the other post. after you are done this, you can load his sled up and have him go back through the u.s. side. I dont' think there is near as much paper work or b.s. with him getting the canadian sled back to the u.s. little more headache, but doable.

Thanks noob. Is there no way of doing this with out meeting right by the boarder? I can't afford to drive 15 or more hours to do this. So If it happens, it will have to take place on this side of the boarder. Is there a way of doing that?

You can have the seller of the other sled act as the transporter/broker of the sled. he will have to pay the gst and fill out the paper work for you and then you can meet on this side of the border. have the 72 hour paper work faxed in and he will just follow the steps of notorizing the title on the u.s. side, stop at the canadian side and fill out the paper work and pay the gst. like anything with the border, call and find out exactly what you need to do. get the officer's name you talked to and time you talked to them so you have record of what's being said. shouldnt' be a problem.
