Track MOD for assault

Somewhere between too dumb to quit and flat earth
Ok so i stole this idea from the rmsha circuit. I actualy bought a track form Keith Curtis this summer that came off of his 600 that he won jackson with a few years back. It was the stock 5.1 with the lugs cut down and track screws in every lug. I ended up pulling half the screws out of my old track on my dragon. So i decided to play with my new sleds track.

Track screws are AWSOME in my honest opinion. They hook up so freeking hard on anything they can get ahold of and offer alot of protection. Ever climb a hill and hit a patch of ice? If you have, you know the hopeless gut wrenching feeling as you slide backwards down a hill on a $12,000 sled as it slams you into the ground and heads for trees. The screws dig into ice very well and also hook up great on logs or if you dig through the snow and hit dirt.

Now i know those riding conditions don't sound fun to alot of you guys but i am very good at finding **** holes and it's nice to not have to worry about geting stuck on ice.

I literaly can pop a wheelie on ice with my assault now. As far as instalation, i simply put screws in every other lug all the way around. Come to find out that if screws are on the outer lugs, they will put deep scratches in your coolers. SOOOOO i took out all the screws and decided i didn't need them. After one ride they were back in. After about 600 miles with this set up, i can honestly say it works. It wont hinder deep snow performance, but will gain you performance on set up snow. So i did a staggerd pattern in every other lug in the center 2 lugs of the track. It also keeps the already stiff lugs on the assualt track from flexing what so ever.

The instalation is easy, they already have the track marked for the screws. Just use your faverite power drill and in 35 min you are done.

The only damage it does to the sled is when you botttom it out they will put little scratches on the inside of the tunnle. A simply guard could be maid to protect it, but i don't realy care about the scratches so im leaving it the way it is. Hope someone finds this helpfull.

Few years ago I put 384 track lug studs (the ones with the conical carbide center) in my 900 Switchback with a 1.25 Predator track. Absolutely awesome performance. After forst season I had broken a couple and lost a couple. Ont the 900 without I could top at 118 and with I topped at 112-114. Try that with picks!
If I hadn't converted to 155 paddles, I'd still be running them. Loved them.

Sorry to bump this old thread...are there any particular kind of screw you are supposed to use to do this? Does the Assault Competition track have dimples or something where you are supposed to put screws in it?

lol, on the 5.1 track you need to cut about .25" off and then put the screws in on the wide spots. On the assualt track there are already little star shapes where you thread the screw in. I recomend hte hex screws as you can pull them out once they are worn and they have alot of head on them.

Thanks. Sounds like it could be a deadly combo. Do you have a suggestion for a particular brand of screw?

Once you put them only on the center lugs do they still gouge the tunnel or coolers?

a little bit on the back. The screws i have are out of a track i bought from keith curtis so i am no sure on the brand. I know F-bomb uses them and swears by them, he may know a specific brand.

thease are all things i did on my 09 dragon to keep my coolers in one piece.

hear is the scratches on my assualt. I have over 1000 miles on it. No big deal in my opinion. There is close to twice the room in the tunnel on the 2011's as there is on the 07-10 sleds.

Yeah, that doesn't look too bad. Do you think it makes the track even worse in the powder? I have no experience with it yet, just people talking about how bad it is makes me nervous.

been getting a few messages on this so i thought i would send it to the top

Noticed the screws in the assault track are not indexed, and the screws in the 5.1 are. Ice screws need to be indexed correctly for maximum traction and if you think your assault is good now, turn them like the 5.1 track. Kold Kutters are very popular in the ice bike arena and can be found in many stores across the snowbelt.
