Towing an enclosed trailer question

I'm gonna do like you guys suggested and put the bigger sleds in the front and start shopping for a WDH. Looks like a set up will cost around $650 bucks by time I get a new 6" drop hitch that will accept the sway bars.

I figure money well spent for piece of mind and family safety.

Doesn't it have tounge sway bars that you can adjust to even out the load? You should just be able to adjust those and even out he swaying and tounge load to make the trailer follow better.

I'm a big fan of the bags in the back. Lets you add air to compensate for more or less load and is an easy adjust for "no trailer" days. From the looks, you have a drop hitch. I like the rapid since it allows me to pick a position depending on which of my trailers I'm pulling. With bigger loads, one size does not fit all...

As for the load level or sway control... I had my trailer tongue extend a foot when they built it thinking that I'd have the option of either but never needed it. I pull with an 07 F250 with a 6" lift and bags without issue. All the front loading advice is on the money, now just stiffen your rear end (that sounded bad. haha) and it will follow all day long.

I tow a 27' trailer with my Ex too. Have air bags and good shocks in the rear seemed to help a bunch. Have been told to put a heavier sway bar in the rear and try the F250-350 springs. Did you lift the rear with springs, blocks or an add-a-leaf? Does it still have the rear sway-bar?

I bought it lifted. It looks like the front springs were changed and teh rear is on blocks.
Who makes the heavier sway bars?

I thought about doing Airbags and a solo sway controller and not messing with the whole weight distribution setup. Then again, more weight tranfer to the steering axle may really settle things down.

I also have a 27' Haulmark and more than likely the tounge weight is your problem. Even if everything looks good move more weight forward and you should notice a substantial difference. Airbags on the vehicle also help. I haven't sprung for a wdh yet but will if we ever head down to Revelstoke.

Don't sell the Excursion!!

I had the exact same setup for a while & loved it!! I never had a problem with sway. I believe what the others have sais above is true.. more tongue weight. If your Excursion has the 7.3L diesel & quad bucket seats, PM me... I want it! My Tahoe sucks for pulling sleds!

Yep- 7.3 and quad buckets + 3rd row bench. Definetely not for sale:D

I'm gonna drag this trailer out to the DOT scale this weekend and see just what the tongue weight is. I plan on shooting for 12 - 15 % of the total trailer weight.

I put the WDH on my 27' enclosed. Purchased it from a U-haul trailer hitch center. The guy who helped me was very knowledgable in helping me set it up right and advice on loading. Made a big difference and a much more comfortable ride. It was a little tricky putting the brackets on the toung of the trailer. Wound up welding them on after some minor mods.

I would get it to a scale and make sure you have enough tongue weight. For what it's worth, we use the weight distributing hitch when towing a similar trailer and don't have any issues with sway. Even going up Bozeman hill doing 70mph into a 70mph headwind. LOL, all you have to worry about is the water temp on the Dmax :)

One sled in the nose with all the gear/spare parts/tools, 2 over the axles and a BBQ in the tail.

Watching water temp on a Duramax. Must have a LLY.

I'm not sure, I don't know the models like that.

It's an 04 with intake/exhaust and an Edge Juice with attitude on #3. It towed VERY well, other than the Bozeman hill in that wind. Water temp was right around 220-230 until we cleared the pass.

Unfortunately the truck ate a set of injectors and the pump on this trip. Injectors were warrantied, pump wasn't. Total bill was $7200 by the time they were done.

He's running an 06 with EFI live and 500rwhp now!

Hawkeye you asked if your tires could be creating a issue-this I have definately seen before.Take an open lug design like the BFG Mud T/A and all the individual blocks will move around like your back end is a boat on water. Will do it on certain vehicles and not others.Try the simple first - reload trailer just as everyone suggests, sway bars are great and I also am a believer in bags. But inflate the bags too much and you will get that sway you are taking about.Always found the truck should have just a slight downward angle to the rear, not enough to affect steering.Hope you figure it out!
