Top End Rebuild

I have an X-Fire 600 with about 7000 miles on an engine that has never been touched. I think the compression is down, and am planning a top end rebuild. If anyone has any links to threads that talk about this, or some advice I would be glad to hear it. Where would you get the parts from? Would you borer the cylinder out if it looks ok, or could I just go with new rings and piston, or possibly just rings? Would you recommend that I do this if I have very limited engine experience?

Thanks

New piston, rings, wrist pin bearings and gaskets. (head o-rings, base gasket and exhaust gasket.) The cylinders are nicasil coated and are probably OK. Wipe them out clean and look for worn areas. If it looks like you have discolored rub marks in the cylinders, you may need to get them replated. Take a shop vac to the coolant bottle and suck the anti freeze out, then take it apart. Country Cat is a good place to get the parts you need, they could also give you the torque specs and sequence. Stuff shop towels around the rods when you take the c-clips off the wrist pin so you don't drop it into the case. Put the pistons in with the mark facing the exhaust. Make sure you do a good job of burping it after you fill it with coolant. Elevate the front of the sled and run it untill you have heat at the rear exchanger, shut it off and let it cool down. Add some more coolant and run it some more, It usually takes a couple of times topping it off.

If you have a reasonable attention to detail & are even 1/2way handy with tools a top end is relatively easy. I was intimidated till I watched my mod guy do it & I realized how easy it was.

Diggerdown's advice is spot on, the only thing I'd add is to carry a gatorade bottle of coolant with you on the first ride, not having the sled all the way burped is pretty common.

oh, some grease on the head gasket O rings helps keep them in place & avoid a pinched O ring which can be a pain.

Top end rebuild.

I would just sell that thing to the next sucker, and buy a new sled. LOL

Thanks for the help. I might tear the top end off, and have a mechanic look at the seals and the rest of it. Try and put the top back on by myself.

Why, you looking to turn that M8 into a backup sled?

Backup sled.

I would have kept the crossfire for a backup sled, but I beat that thing to sh**. Here is flatlandassn's sled a few winters ago before he bought it from me. I say to hell with the rebuild. He needs 700 jugs and pistons on that thing so it can finally get out of its own way over 9000 ft.
