took the dirt toys up AF

St. Anthony's sand dunes are much funner than little Sahara's. It's worth the extra hour drive for us. We get up there 3 or 4 times a year usually.

More fun is subjective.
I like the fact that the dunes in Idaho are for the most part bigger, and more open/flowing.
Nice dunes for high speeds and smooth transfers.
Plus I like the 4th and 5th gear pinned jumps up there, but thats all there is is dunes... Not much variety at all.
Little sahara you can ride the smaller more tecnical dunes, or the larger dunes on the backside of the mountain for similar riding to idaho.
What I like about little sahara is the diversity... Small dunes, large dunes, whoop trails, ceder trails, wide open roads, mountain trails, slickrock, abandoned mines, porter rockwells old cabin.
Just so much more you can do and see at little sahara.

You havent explored much of the dune area in idaho have you...

try going northeast from egin lakes for small technical dunes, it will drop you onto desert roads that take you to all sorts of lava tube caves, ice caves, sink holes you can repel into and other fun stuff. If you were wanting a crazy adventure and packed enough gas, you could ride desert trails all the way to island park, eat lunch, refuel, and come back (on my list of things to do someday) bring the GPS and/or maps, probably do over 100 miles on that trip!

if you go up the sand steps on the mountain behind the big dunes at egin there are all sorts of trails all over the mountain. (i have heard that there is now a huge elk ranch in the middle of the caldera with fences for miles that block a few once awesome trails)

I guess I havent.
I have hit some of the trails norh of egin lakes, but It didn't look like they went very far.
Are you talking about trails north of the "resort", hook up campgrounds to the north east of egin lakes?
I have ridden the dunes over there, but they are smaller and we never really ventured further north.
Not to mention we park at the lake, so fuel is a concern also, although our new 450's would propbably alow us to take a longer ride.
We also usually paddle up in idaho.
Next time I will keep my knobby on and do more exploring.
I guess I have never taken the time or had the right people show me the area.
Little sahara if the dunes are soft or if we get tired of them there are a lot of other options which is good.
Although its not as easy to go back and forth from inside to outside of the park with all the fences now.

yea if you stay at the sand hills resort (the rv oasis in the middle of the small dunes) across the road to the northeast there are all sorts of desert roads and trails that go for miles. You used to be able to ride up into the caldera and explore all the peaks and valleys, and there are trails that go all the way around the caldera. But staying on that side means its a long ways to the big dunes.

growing up i only had a 93 xr250 with no paddle. All my buddies had the cr250s with the paddles, so I was much more into the exploring and trail riding than the dunes. Explored that area for 12 years, thats how i found most all that stuff. I cant verify it, but im almost positive there are wild horses roaming around out there... no bigfoot sightings though...

Thanks for the info!
Now I am excited to go there and see some different terrain.

I have been pretty much everywhere at little sahara from IPP to Eureka.
My pa and I used to desert race.
After a race we would go camping and explore a lot of the terrain we raced on.
Lots of area that a lot of people don't ever venture to.

there are trails now that run along the fence, the one that goes to the dunes to the north on the back side, it has a pretty nasty hill down to them so watch out, or at least it was bad when it was new, or if your a pus*y you can take the road

rode af single track again, damn some of this stuff is freaky as hell...locked up a 06 YZ450 about 10 miles away from any trail wider than 8".....man was it hell getting that bike out, we had three guys on bikes so we took turns pushing that POS yami, im sure some know the single track near the 8800" elevation sign, we took the track to the east, took about 3 hours to get that turd yami to a trail fork, everything else was down hill until we got the main trail on the cascade springs side, took some time looking for a good spot to tie off a strap and pull the bike another 5 miles back to the trailer, i was amazed at how easy it was to tow that turd....the mighty honda rules the dirt once again:cool:

da bikesVVV, two or the four need new vlaves and maybe a head??

you tell white lightening she can keep talking for a few more weeks;)

the wide ratios bikes rule the mtns, no so much at the dunes...:(

and BBQ/Forum ride sounds good to me

I have a cabin in Midway. The BBQ is junk though.

my bbq is fairly portable... I just cant do weekends for the next 1.5 months... Looking into riding possibly next wed or thurs around 3 in AF canyon again.

white lightening has a rekluse clutch installed. Makes it much more manageable in the mountains and still have the legs of a race bike! way fun! Who needs wide ratio?

Rode up AF last night... im amazed at the amount of hot mountain bike chics up there...

the 157 ridge trail from mill canyon springs to rock springs is frickin ridiculous... i think next time im going to hike it first and remove all the huge loose boulders that some how appeared from last winter. Also the 40 from 172 junction up to mill canyon springs is in rough shape... that one i did do some boulder removal... I was disappointed that the huge shade tree at the 41,157 junction had blown down this past winter. It was always such a nice spot to stop and have a drink... :(

Tim – I got a portable BBQ in the trailer that can handle a medium size job. And what’s up with not calling me about the BOSS seat:mad:, no worries:cool: though as I got one from Darrin.

Phatty – no clue with all those references to trails and canyons…..all I know is we found a great trail that starts near the 8,850ish elevation sign and hugs a nice steep ridge, most other trails are not so easy to get up. The one that drops down into cascade springs is dangerous to get up, full of big rocks and what I like to call “moon dust” I’m just pumped to find more new trails to ride, im sure the AF side is still jacked up, too much traffic

Chub - i plan to ride AF on saturday

You got have a map bro!

I have a sweet PDF file of AF trails... whats your email?
