Took out a couple of newbies this weekend

So I was sitting at the bar and listning to these two guys telling the bartender all about there first days ride (ever) and wanting more but didnt know where to go. So after some conversation, my group agreed to take them out the next day. Well after we met up for breakfast we were off and 30 minutes into the ride we were digging them out of a creek bottom area. Then after 2 hours of constantly pulling them out one says he has had enough and was truck bound. We told him he was in for the day ride....

I just want to say that we ALL started somewhere and these guys were troopers. They listened to the advice they were givin and tried to execute it. By the end of the day they were doing 200% better and were friends for life. One said he was going to upgrade his sled as soon as he gets back then get right back to the mtns.

It is refreshing to see such enthusiasim and I wanted to remind all of you veteran riders of this. As much as we hate to get dragged down by new riders we must do our part in helping them. I know we have our agendas and want to stick to them but truthfuly at the end of the day having a few beers and listning to these guys talk about what a great day they had was very rewarding and helps keep peeps in our sport.

I remember my first trip out west. The way I see it, the veterans you go with on you first trip, can make or break you. They could down right get you to cry if they wanted to. haha. But yes everyone has to start somewhere. And I am no expert rider but all I can say is, I'm glad I went with a great group of vets, otherwise I might still be a ditch banger or river rat.

I also agree that the first few rides you have as a newbie with a group can make a big difference!! I am glad that you helped them out and taught them a bit on how to ride in the mountains!!

Good for you. And just think that there are people out there making money off of those people by doing what you did for those guys.

I know the feeling last year my buddy who is a Pro MX rider decided to get into sleds so he buys a new M8 gets it all piped and squared away and out we went. The first few rides were an exercise in getting him unstuck, but by the middle of the season he was getting to be pretty good, by the end of the season he could ride, and he spent more time getting his sled ready for this year than at the MX track. Welcome to the Dark side.

Thank you

I'm one of the guys you took out this weekend. Thank you very much for taking us with your group. It was definitely a learning experience for both of us, and I appreciate your patience, advice, and being our guides for the day. Hopefully someday I will be able to do the same for another newbie and can help the sport to grow.

nothing beats the first time.

I'm in debt tot he guys who took me.

I can relate to this. The guys I go with are way better than I am and they have gotten me into places I would never have seen. And places I and nobody should ever be. But it makes you a better rider....to be pushed all the time. I wouldnt trade it for anything.

I am the other newbie you took out this weekend and also wanted to thank you and the others you ride with. It was a learning experience for sure. Maybe we will run into you guys again sometime.

Are you sure you guys should be thanking him? From now on you are going to be dumping thousands of dollars every year into the latest and greatest for your sled. You're going to be leaving you wife and kids for weeks at a time to get out and ride. You are going to look forward to the snow when everybody else despises it. It's a downward spiral from here on out.:p:D:beer;

And it is something that you just can't explain to anybody else (except a fellow rider). Nice work Himark!

Welcome aboard!

That's awesome!! :face-icon-small-coo

It's wonderful to read this. :) I try to make a point of at least once a season getting someone new out. It does take patience, and yes the manner of teaching will either make or break someone. Everybody does start somewhere, and we've all been through the learning curve, though it's much more pleasant when someone really can slow down and see the big picture.

Thumbs up to you Himark, and to all of the others who take time to do this, and do it the *right* way. :beer;

Congrats to those Dustino and newbie83, and welcome aboard! :face-icon-small-hap

There is another side to this coin, I have often taken out newbies, but, almost no one thinks about the old guy who still wants to get out.

Good point! :) This was brought up at our local club by an *old guy*. There were peeps that were more than willing to have him along, us included. You just adjust your ride that day accordingly. This would even include my Dad. He hasn't ridden in years (pretty much gave that up when our family grew). Since then he's put on some *extra weight*, but we do try to get him out now and again as well. I love having him out with us, but he scares the heck out of me. :eek: Maybe that's payback for what we put him through as we were growing up. :o
