Too much octane?

Hi, my son just bought an 04 900. It's got Boysen reeds,SLP twins and can and RKtech head. The head says torque line and in small print by RKT. The dealer told us the previous owner ran 100LL. That's what we did today, it ran great till we got up hi. Any time load was applied it crapped out. Would run good down hill and for the most part on the level but most up hills, trouble. I'm just wondering if this head needs straight av gas. Would it run better up high on a mix?

Hi, we ran it today with 50/50 94 and 100LL. Had to end the ride early with a leak so didn't get a good chance to try it. It did run clean on a couple of fair size hills but hero snow not deep. It's got carbs not efi. Plugs are light brown and more normal looking than yesterday with the straight Av gas. Did a comp test tonight...167 both sides at sea level!! no danger of the wife takeing it out. So think we're safe with 50/50 about 4000'?

Why are you mixing, how its running has nothing to do with the mix of gas,you are garanteed a jetting issue IMHO,run Straight 100ll,or find out what it needs by knowing what heads and timeing you have from the engine builder,to just start mixing without understanding what the factors are will get expensive.check your piston wash, read up on it and jetting your engine, check what jets you have, figure out if you have a rich sputter or a lean stutter, and adjust jets accordingly..jetting will change from 100 octane to A mix of pump fuel as well..good luck..

I ran 94 chevron till i had aburn down on it and was explained to me how it has the most additives and is not good for toys talk to a mod engine builder about it yourself i suggest...

Thanks for the replys guys. My son is out here for Christmas and impulsivly bought the sled. We wanted to get some riding in over the hollidays. Yes I can contact people now. We rode again on full 100LL yesterday. It ran better and better as the day went on. It sat at the dealer for a year and a half. Very little sputtering yesterday, i think it might just need to clean out. I can call the owner this week as the dealer will be open and find out just what's in there.
