togwotee mountain lodge is it worth the money?

Yeah Alpine sucks.... too crowded, dang near flat, have to ride from your door, oh and there is absolutely no peelers on Saturday nights at one of the local watering holes.....;)

Riding

I'm wondering hows the riding.
Which places can I drive my sled right from the cabin?
TML you can it looks like the cabin is pretty tight if you want 5 guys and no more.
If we wanted to sleep 7-8 guys in a cabin, and drive our sleds right from the cabin, which one would be a good place to stay at? The shortest trail ride would be the best.

I would not put more than 4 guys in a cabin at TML. You can always try to book a suite on the third floor. If you are looking to ride from the cabin and have more guys, head down toward Lava Mountain lodge. Or you can rent a cabin from here: http://www.mountainpinnacleproperties.com/. You are going to have a trail ride though depending on where you want to ride - there is no way around it.

Which place has the least amount of trail riding to get to the good stuff?

4 grown men in a cabin @ Tog and its full and someone is sleeping on the floor... Honestly if I were to stay in a cabin there again, itd be 3 guys max... Not to mention walking up the hill to the lodge for grub in the AM or PM can be cold and not something to look forward to!!
I agree w/lookin4snow try for one of the "suites" on the 3rd floor...Those are nice and 4 guys is pretty good fit. Plus there's a seperate room and a nice ledge inside the room to keep your gear out of the way..
Tog or Turpin meadows will prolly get you to better snow quicker than Lava as they are higrher up the pass...

On trips where we do the cabin only rental and have 4 guys, we bring one of the Cabela's man cots and set it up by the dining table. That way everyone has a bed, and to be honest, the cot is more comfortable than the hide a bed. But it is cozy that way. Three is the best.

TML is the closest to the good stuff with the least amount of trail riding. We are going to try one of the houses for rent down by Lava later this winter and give that a shot. No personal experience there so cannot say good or bad.

Merry Christmas!

When we ride that area, we like Line Shack or Crooked Creek.
Have heard good things about Sawmill, but haven't stayed there yet.

I've stayed at both Togwotee and Lava. I would highly recommend Lava over tog. The food, service, and employees are all great. We had 7 people in the big house there, the house is nice, and it is actually pretty big. We had plenty of room in there for all of our stuff. And they have a heated shop you can use to work on your sled if you break something. My only complaint was we had to trailer up the hill a ways everyday we rode, but we were there in march so the snow was minimal down there. But i think i would rather drive 10min up the hill to ride, than spend twice the money on lodging and be crammed in a little cabin.

Thanks

I was thinking that was going to go there, if I have to trailer 10 minutes that's not bad.
One guy from the group went with 5 guys in a cabin at T.M.L. and said he'll never do it again. way to small.
For the same price we can stay at lava and split it up between 7 people instead of the realistic 3 you can put in a TML cabin.
worth the drive to me.
Thanks for the help guys.

Togwotee

With all that *****ing I did, were going to stay at Togwotee Mountain Lodge.
Guy got a ok rate on the main lodge, so it'll be nice to ride right from the rooms.
How much do guides run if you don't buy there package deal? probley would be nice for the first day. Then go out on our own to explore for the rest of the trip. But if it's expensive might just go explore the first day.

Rates at Togwotee Lodge

Am I the only guy that can't find a rate sheet on Togwotee Mountain Lodge's new website? I have a pretty good guess of what it is, but I have a couple new guys that want to go and need to actually talk it over with their wives:confused:, and we can't find any current info without entering a credit card number to book. It can't possibly be this hard. I think I am too old and stupid for these new webpage designers. Can someone give us a link?

My two cents on where to stay... If you are from the flatland, Stay at Togwotee. It takes a trip or two and some poking around the lodge to see what arrangements fit you best, but you are right at the top of the mountain with guides, gas, snow and food. Hard to beat that after traveling to ride the mountains.

As always, thanks in advance!

Found it!

Way at the bottom of the web site in the fine print.

Thanks to the Captain and you know who.

When you really add up what is left in your wallet at the end of your trip, the package is a pretty good deal all things considered.

I have been going to Togwotee since 1984. There have been a lot of changes over the years, but still my preferred place to stay. Have stayed at Turpin Meadows, Hatchet and in at Super 8 in Dubois. Highly recommend skipping Super 8 in Dubois unless you like the smell of curry. Stayed last year and the smell was so horrific it about made you sick... under middles eastern ownership/management

We were just out there over New Years and the snow was great just a little ways off the trails. Trails were not very good, but we were in deep powder within a couple miles of the lodge. The price you are quoting is full package which includes breakfast, supper, happy hour and a guide. We always just go room only and they are having a 25% discount now thru sometime later in Jan. Our cabin was around 180 with taxes and everything. Split 3 to 4 ways not bad. You can take your own food as in cabins you have fridge, stovetop, microwave, toaster and coffee maker. You can also stay in the lodge for even less. Regular rooms with two beds and suites with bed, bunk beds and couch. Breakfast buffet is worth $11 each day in my opinion if you like to eat a hearty breakfast. The restaurant food is ok, but can be a little expensive and a little fancy for us midwesterners. We prefer to eat from the bar menu. Burgers, Chicken tenders, wings, trout, roast beef sandwich with mashed and gravy and much more. Portions were pretty generous this year. I will admit the last several years the service has been very poor, but we were pleasantly surprised this year. It was very obvious that service was an area they were stressing to make great improvement in. We had our kids with us so eating in the bar was not an option, but bar staff was waiting on us in the fireside room and checking on us regularly once they knew we would be sitting in there. I just went to the bar, asked for a menu and told them where we were and they were there regularly to see if we needed anything. When we did go in the bar we noticed off duty employees were asked to stay in the back out of the way (not at the tables and not at the bar)and the bar staff checked on us probably 5 times in the half hour we were in there. Great improvement over past years when you basically had to wait on yourself almost.

Going back out in 3 weeks.

well worth the money to stay where the snow is. the staff, the services, the lodge, atmosphere, everything was great this year. even though we have never expirienced some of the bad some people talk about, you could see EVERYONE was there to make the guests expirience memorable. they bent over backwards and then some, to keep everyone happy.

from the store personell, the guides, front desk, all the waiters, waitresses, rental shop people, managment, and housekeeping... EVERYONE was there to make our expirience better.

good to hear

we are going feb 12th-18th staying in the cabin, no package deal. That doesn't seem like a very good deal to me. But some are better than others at math.
I think I can lay out a spread to match any restaurant at a quarter of the price.
and relax a bit while I eat.
I hope I have a great time I can't wait!!!

think about the package.... by the time you cook, clean up dishes ect... i am on vacation, the last thing i want to do is cook or clean. and if you need a guide, on the package it is FREE, with the non package it is over 50.00 per person per day. and YES the guides are worth their weight in gold!!!! find where we are here, without i guide.... i dare you. LOL!

these guys ride 100 plus days every year, and know where this stuff is, even in low or no fresh conditions. going out a few days at a time a few times a year, you might find or remember where a few places are but, you cant find all the areas. just food for thought.

It would be nice to have a guide for a day or two to get the lay of the land, but I think going out and finding our own way is part of the adventure too. We might not see as much, but it would be nice to figure some of it out on our own, and not have our hands held the whole time. Plus I hear the guides are hit and miss, you can get stuck with a group of trail riders and waste a good days riding.
I like to cook and if you split it up it's not to bad, im on vacation not in a coma
I can cook and clean, i'm not going on a all inclusive to hawaii with the wife, I look at it more like deer hunting, to each his own though. we'll see how it goes and make the desired changes for next year.
