To stud or not to stud?

Anyone recomend studs? I just bought an 04 600 and never had a chance
to let it rip. Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

From what I gather from the responses... is I should add studs
3 sizes, from 1.0 inch in the centre, 5/8 ths closer to the edge
and 1/2" at the edge, even though I don't plan on riding on ice
I will add them.

I have ridden for two seasons in VT without studs with only one time where I thought oh my god I am going to die. I am very close to buying some but the money is a factor and its really hard to find studs larger than 1.86 which is still shorter than our lugs. BuffaloHawk has 2.5" studs that he bought from some mystery man on ebay. check out his profile. I thought about the lug screws but my track is a bit worn out to be drilling them into the ends of my lugs.
It would be nice to have them.
 
Oh yeah dude, you'll need them in Qc ! Safer when you brake and when you rail an icy turn. Hooks up like crazy on the ice oh man... it's almost scary. The ones I had on my good'ol 503 were 5/8", 3/4" and 1" motorcycle ice racing screws that I screwed in some of the lugs (shorter ones on the sides and longer ones in the middle). Put longer ones than that and you'll tear the lugs off, they have to be able to bend otherwise they'll tear off. You really don't need that much, I think I threw around 60 total for my 121" track.

BuffaloHawk, how many pounds do you think these Woody's studs added to your track ? See, that's what would hold me from doing it. If it's 10 pounds... damn, I would stick with the motorcycle ice racing studs for sure. Adding rotating weight to our machines is something we should avoid or select as plan B if plan A doesn't work ! Plan A worked out for me... for ONE season, they were quite done after one season though...
 
weight was maybe 2-3 pounds max...they have aluminum backers and nuts... for where i ride,if they added 10 pounds, id stil run em'! as sled said,i am on the east side of the continent! gotta have em... good traction crossing roads too...
 
had mine kick out a few times on ice, slams you down fast and hard.
If anyone finds studs long enough share where you got them. I want them on before i hit the ice again.

i got mine on ebay.seller said he was a factory polaris hill climber/hill cross racer. he had the steel set i got and a set of titanium ones that i got outbid on. i looked back on my ebay account but the list doesnt go back that far to see who i got em from... ill do what i can to find a source for them

We'd use the angled digger aluminum support plates from Woody's and their long neck 5/16" nut.

Piece of cake to do and would probably be very reasonable on price.

We'd use the angled digger aluminum support plates from Woody's and their long neck 5/16" nut.

Piece of cake to do and would probably be very reasonable on price.

Carbide tips would be nice... but it wouldn't be piece of cake for me anymore ! It would complexify the project a lot actually and I would have to go through some testing just to ensure the carbide tip stays in place and validate that the welding process (or whatever process they use to put carbide at the end of a steel stud) is good enough so it doesn't rip off off of the stud itself. And I don't want to do it since I can't test'em here out west !

I think what they're using to put carbides at the end of these studs is a dedicated "spot" weld machine. We've got something like that at my full time job where we "spot weld" spikes to rolls to make spike rolls to drive logs in sawmill applications. Big investment.

The ones I could make wouldn't have carbide inserts unfortunately. If you go see on the woody's website there's quite a few models of studs and quite a few don't have carbide inserts. I don't know how much longer the ones with the carbide tips would last... depends on the type and amount of asphalt or ice you gotta go through and how much crap you throw at them I guess !

Buffalo, are yours carbide tipped ?
 
gotta have carbide tips! i think they might be brazed in somehow? seems like a small hole drilled in the stud then carbide set in... i think the non carbide studs are for ice racing where they sharpen them often...

T, ill be your east coast tester! i wish i had more room to mount a row closer to the edges for more corner bite! they would have to be a bit shorter for the lean factor

sweet set up man. looks like mine! youre gonna love them! i noticed your step seat, i like that. we are gonna have to have an east coast ice fest and tear sheet up!!! did they say thats the lonest they had? also is it 2.2 overall length or 2.2 from inside head? they look as long as mine but mine angle forward some from the backers

They are 2.200 from inside the head with carbide tips they only offered longer ones with no carbide tip,race steel ones. Cant wait to see how these will work!!!!
