To Re-Build or Part-Out ?

'02 Mtn Cat 800

I have a friend who recently lost the motor in his '02 Mtn. Cat 800. I've been looking for a complete motor for him, but haven't been able to find one yet. Then I got to thinking about parting a motor together, get a good bottom end from Country Cat, some good used cylinders, new pistons and only be out $1800 plus labor.
Dealer quoted him $4000 to replace the whole motor and the sled is probably only worth $2200... I think he wants to get it running and then maybe sell it since he's not ready to drop $10k on a new sled.
What do you guys think? Know of anybody parting-out an 800 twin?

my sled blew up today lol i dont know what happened yet and i was told the 900 king cats were bullet proof

Can I join the club?

My sled's in good shape but, it's not even getting sold for $3,500. By parting it out, and with my extra parts, I might double that. I've got extra hoods three tracks, etc.
By the way Steve , I do have an extra set of stock heads. Actually, I think they have a slight shave.

I don't feel so bad! Lost a rod bearing last week and looking for a crank. I notice the wrist pins seem a little lose too. 3400 miles, all stock. Switched over to blue marble oil this year and the inside of the cylinders have a nice coat of oil, so I don't think its an oil problem - just tired.
